-FIVE YEARS EARLIER-
"i'm sorry y/n, i gotta go!" peter said, eyes flickering to the back bus window. you gripped his wrist tightly as he tried to pull away.
"please be careful." you whispered. "please."
you could hear everyone on the bus yell with caution as they clobbered over to the window, gazing at the spaceship that nestled itself between buildings. fear prickled your skin at the thought of peter, a boy deathly afraid of needles, battling against it.
but you had to let him go.
he leaned down and passionately kissed your lips, slipping a hand onto your cheek to bring you closer. "i promise." he muttered back, shooting you a peter-like smile before climbing out the speeding bus window.
"what's up with you kids, never seen a spaceship before?" the bus driver barked. you felt your eyes water with worry and you closed them shut.
please be okay

"you've been gone for five years, y/n."
"half of the universe was snapped away."
"you're back now. you're safe."
these sentences clouded your mind with a heavy weight, like a fog too opaque to see through. you were hearing what everyone was saying, but you still couldn't quite grasp it.
five years?
your mind was constantly racing, constantly trying to have all this information make sense. five years ago, you were on the train back to your apartment, when half the universe and you vanished. you remembered watching fellow passengers blink away, but you don't remember it happening to you.
early this morning however, you were thrown back onto the train, stumbling for balance as your legs gave way. a few other passengers did the same thing, and you all just blinked in utter confusion.
so here you were, surrounded by family and friends in your apartment, trying to make sense of the situation. you had immediately raced home upon hearing news headlines and witnessing the chaos around you unfold.
"where's peter?" you asked hoarsely. a silence fell onto the room and panic rose. "where is he?"
"he was blipped, like you." brad, your classmate and cousin, said. you two had been very close, and when he heard that you had returned he raced over to your apartment as soon as possible. he looked very much different, and his physical change brought out a sense of dread inside you.
if he changed so much, who else did?
"i need to find him." you said, rising to your feet. suddenly your attention switched to the tv that was playing softly in the back of the room as a news anchor spoke urgently.
"...with help from the avengers and several other superheroes, the national threat to the universe, or thanos, has been exterminated."
peter was out there. you knew it.
"however..."
there was a pause in the anchors voice, and her eyes briefly flashed nothing but pure pain. you slowly walked closer to the tv and stared at the screen as the headline rolled across the bottom of the teleprompter.
"beloved tony stark is deceased."
you felt your gut recede back into your body, a punch so painful you stumbled backwards onto the couch, clutching for anything that would weigh you down.
tony, the man who gave peter a chance. the man who was yet another father figure...dead. tears welled up inside you as you rose to your feet, scanning around the room.
"i need to find him." you cracked. if you were feeling helpless, you couldn't even imagine what peter was thinking. "now."
♡
your boots crackled underneath the dirt and pebbles, debris surrounding the horizon as you ran over to the hoard of ambulances and news vans. you weaved your way past the crowd, looking around for his face.
"peter!" you called, voice hoarse and desperate. you had seen on tv that the avengers were assembled in the debris formally known as the new avengers headquarters. but upon arriving, you quickly realized whatever avengers were alive were left with a crumpled version of their home. "peter!" you called again, tears pricking in the center of your eyes.
"y-y/n?" a trembling voice called back. you frantically looked around, trying to find the familiar caller.
"peter! where are you?" you weaved through the crowd, pushing people to the side as you scanned the horizon. you let out a quiet sob as your eyes landed on the hurt boy who clutched himself in remorse.
"y/n." he whimpered, body crumbling beneath him. you raced over to his fallen body, legs tired but nether less carrying you. he was letting violent sobs shake him, and urgently you dropped to your knees and wrapped your arms around him, nestling yourself in the familiar crook of his neck.
"i'm here i'm here." you whispered back, tears falling steadily down your face. it felt so good to feel him underneath your fingertips, but with each cry a piece of your heart shriveled with him.
"we won, we won." he mumbled endlessly, gripping and clawing at your body as cried harder. "but he's..."
"i know." you mumbled back, letting him fall beneath you. he let out throat tearing gasps as he tried to calm himself down, but it was no use. you gripped his hair and hugged him tighter.
you two sat like that for a while, intertwined in an embrace like no other. he cried underneath you, letting nothing but pure grief pore out of his eyes.
"we won."
