-Jake's Point of View-
"Yes I kno-"
"No, you don't know. You don't know what it's like to have your heart torn out Jake!"
"I'm sorry that you feel this way but I just need you to list-"
"I'm not going to listen! My wife cheated on me! With my brother! They betrayed me!"
"MATTHEW!" I yelled into the phone, sitting forward in my chair. This was the last phone call I had to make today and Matthew Miller would not stop talking for more than 10 seconds.
Matthew Miller was one of my oldest clients. When he was 30 his mom was hit by a car and then the man driving the car refused to pay for it. Long story short, we won a lot of money. Now he is back again, his wife of 10 years has been cheating on him for almost the whole marriage. He found out last week when he discovered that their daughter, Ashlee, isn't actually his daughter because he has been sterile since birth. The main reason he was calling me now was because he wanted to complain to someone who would listen, but also because he wanted to sue them.
"What Jake?" He demanded, his voice still raised at me. This had been a long day.
"You can't sue them. Bu-"
"Why the hell not?" He growled into the phone.
"Because you can't, but you can file for a divorce on the grounds of adultery."
"Yeah, I want to do that." He said, his voice much calmer now.
"Good, I'm glad we sorted that out. Can you come by my office tomorrow? We can get the paperwork started."
"Yes, fine. I'll be there."
"I really am sorry, Matthew. I can only imagine what you are feeling right now."
"It's fine. Have a nice night." His voice was still a bit harsh as the beeping signalized that my phone call was over.
I sighed and leaned back in my chair, running my hands through my hair. Then I stood and walked towards the door. I picked up my briefcase and shot a goodbye at Laurie as I headed to the elevator.
Once the doors slid closed I pulled out my phone again and read the message. It confused me beyond belief. Why would anyone want to meet alone at Williams'? It was the worst place for a private meeting.
I sighed in incomprehension and looked up at the little dial with numbers sliding by. When I finally reached the floor the elevator pinged and the doors opened before me.
I stepped out and into the cool breeze and the fading sun. It was absolutely beautiful. I smiled to myself as I walked over to my car and unlocked the door. I slipped inside and shut the door behind me. The engine came to life as I pulled my sunglasses out of my glove compartment. The radio blared and I pulled my car out of the parking lot.
I started to drive home, everything escaping my mind except for that one topic. Trevor.
Somehow it tied in with Taylor and Grayson, but I just couldn't piece it together. There were a couple ideas that had come to mind but none of them really made sense. If any of them were true she would have told me. Taylor told me everything. I had worked hard so a long time to get it to the point where she felt comfortable talking to me. So why would she hide this one thing from me?
Subconsciously I pulled into the driveway of my apartment building. I parked the car and then took the stairs two at a time. Heather awaited me at the top but I dodged her as soon as I heard the sound of gum smacking.
I pushed my door open silently and stepped inside closing the door behind me. There was the sound of pans being put on the stove and a dog barking. Oddly it reminded me of life before my mom moved out.
