"Good morning, sunshine,” I hear Jade whisper to me in my right ear. I groggily roll over and a thought reaches me. What's she doing in my room this early in the morning on a Sunday?
"What are you doing here?” I say sluggishly, covering my face in the blankets. She pulls them back gruffly.
"We're going adventuring. I have no idea where yet but we are. Meet me downstairs in ten,” she says before skipping to the steps leading to the foyer to do who knows what.
I stand slowly and walk to my bathroom to clean up before stepping in front of my full length mirror, examining myself. Hmm. What would look in Brone's fashion schedule today?
I walk to my closet, picking up a pair of skinnies and a blank v neck before re-evaluating myself. My hair is askew and it looks like a shave is in order. I’m looking a bit scruffy. Taking one last look at myself, I grab my phone off my nightstand where it charges before walking downstairs to find Jade with a cup of coffee and a hoodie slung over her arm.
She smiles when she sees me. "Ready, stud?” she says grinning.
I nod before telling my dad I'll be back later. All I hear is okay before shutting the front door.
~
"Where did you plan on taking me?” I ask eying her curiously.
"Nowhere special. Just around town. Want to stop for coffee? I'm running low."
"God knows you need anymore,” I say jokingly. Unlike my Dad and me, Jade only likes cold coffee.
"And you need more hot coffee?” she says in a teasing tone.
We both smile before I turn up the radio to play some 90s Alternative.
We decide to stop at the nearest gas station which just so happens to contain the best home brewed coffee in town. We both buy the largest cup. After we're back in the car with our controversial coffee, we drive for a while until we come to a long winding road void of any signs.
"What is this?” I ask Jade.
"Nowhere. Didn't you see the signs?” she says trying to make me laugh. Reluctantly, it works.
"Very funny. What exactly is back here that you want me to see?"
"There's a stunning view of the town up here on the cliff. A few people say there's a cave hidden away behind all the mangled trees. I intend to find it. I stowed a bag of dynamite and flashlights in the trunk of the minivan. We'll get them out later." I'm not surprised by her findings. She's always finding spontaneous things for us to do. At least she used to.
A few minutes later we come into a huge landing where a cliff awaits our arrival just 500 yards ahead. Putting the emergency brake on, we jump out and walk to the edge.
