"Jade, we've been driving for hours and you need some rest. Your head may implode if not,” I say still laughing from our last dry humored joke.

We've been in the car for an estimated 6 hours. We've been on Interstate 94 for quite some time as time counts down. Soon we'll be taking another exit until we finally reach Chicago to log into our hotel. I'm excited to see the big city. All I've known is a small town. But, I'm slowly sinking on the inside just imagining looking at her deteriorating stone again.

I swear I've never realized how charming Jade is. She's only ever been a kid I met on the streets of our symmetrical housing arrangement. Her gritty hands gripped the bicycle handles, her feet peddling just as quickly as they can move. It took me months to find the courage to even speak to her. I saw her as this mysterious, brave girl who has no time for petty people like myself. Upon realizing she was the opposite, I marched right on over and pushed her by the shoulder lightly and said, "Catch me if you can! You're it!” before darting the other way. In response, she chased me like any kid would do. After that, it ended up being the base to our friendship. Now here we are.

Before responding, Jade turns the stereo down to eight and says, "Okay! Okay, okay. There's a few rest stops ahead. We'll stop at one and alternate every 50 miles or so until we reach Chicago." She turns the stereo back up to 12 like before and we drive in silence for a while until we reach a Stop n' Shop along the side of the highway.

"Hey, sweet cheeks. Anything I can help you with?” the brunette cashier says to me. She seems nice. Jade glares at her and turns to go find the bathroom. I stay where I'm at. Grinning a little, I tell her we'll be leaving soon and that we were just in dire need of a few snacks and their hopefully sanitary public restrooms.

"Well, I'm here if you'd like someone to talk to you while you wait for your...err...friend,” she says smiling. I thank her and turn the other way. Looking toward the floor guiltily and laughing under my breath.

Jade finally emerges from the bathroom a few moments later. I'm carrying a mound of junk food and cream sodas when she walks up to me. I feel as though I’m a child pleading for my mother to allow me the sweet sensation of one more cookie from the cookie jar.

"B... what in the-" I look at her pleading with my sad, puppy dog face and after a few seconds, she caves. "Fine. We'll finish whatever it is that you've chosen. But after that, no more junk food." She takes one last look at my arms and shakes her head, a smile creeping up on her rosy, red lips.

After we pay with the dazzling cashier giving me google eyes, we make our way outside. Right before I shut the door, I turn around and say to the brunette, "Bye beautiful! Nice meeting you!” I wink at her, sure that her face will turn cherry red. Jade's already pumped the gas and I'm halfway to the car when she turns to me after putting the cap back on. She says, "I can't believe you, Ha Ha. She was so flirting with you and you were totally ‘not having any of it’." I start grinning.

"Well, she's pretty. Maybe I liked her." She shakes her head no so I say, "Jealous much?"

"Not at all, baby. At least you can get someone to flirt with you." We both slide into the car and I look at her and say, "You're an asshole. Ha Ha, but I made you look like a fool in iHop. So, I'll let it slide this time." I wink and latch in my seatbelt. Back on the yellow brick road we go.
