Danny's POV

My job is going great. Steve would be so proud of me. I'm always on time, never late, I always say "my pleasure" to the dumbass customers even if I don't actually mean it. I'm a wonderful employee. Today I got my first paycheck. I bought myself some groceries for my day off tomorrow. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with my free day. I'll probably visit Steve in the hospital.

I was going to propose to him that night. After we had the uh, Mac and cheese. It's a little silly really. Having something a child could cook on the night you plan to ask your boyfriend to marry you. Silly. It's just silly. I wish I'd done it sooner. I may not get the chance now.

He might not wake up.

He will. Yeah, he'll wake up. Steve's a fighter. He's got to wake up. I snapped out of my depressed daze and continued washing some dishes before I left to visit Steve at the hospital.

I talked for hours and hours to Steve about work and how things were going without him.

"I still miss you babe. Everyday. All the time. I can hardly survive without you. I'm barley hanging on here." I could feel hot tears filling up my eyes, daring to spill out. I blinked them back forcefully. I have to be strong. No crying here. Not here. I closed my eyes and grabbing Steve's hand, I pictured the night at the beach.

"Danny! Take my picture with the seagulls!" Steve grinned childishly at me. I nodded with an equal grin and snapped a couple of shots with Steve as he held up a couple of French fries for the birds. They swarmed near us. Steve laughed at my panicked expression as I fled the area to get away from the birds.

"Someone could lose an eye feeding those maniacs, Jesus Christ!" I exclaimed wildly. Steve giggled at me and rolled his eyes.

"They're just birds babe."

"Yeah. Birds from Hell." I mumbled under my breath.

Steve and I walked hand in hand from the beach to a boardwalk in town. There was a small collection of carnival games to play. For $5 you got 20 tickets. I spent $10 and bought 40. We walked by the booths and I noticed Steve eyeing a giant stuffed panda bear. It was one of those ball throwing games where you try to knock down the milk bottles. I smoothly rolled up my sleeve and walked up to the booth.

"Step right up and for just 3 tickets you get three balls! Hit 1 bottle you get a leopard print slap bracelet, hit 2 you get a sticker sheet, hit 3 you get a small stuffed otter, hit 4 you get a medium stuffed parrot and if you hit more than 5 you get the grand prize, this jumbo stuffed panda bear!" The carnival worker exclaimed right in my face. I wanted to punch him but I handed him my tickets and took the softballs he handed me in return. I focused and threw the first one. I hit down 3 bottles.

"Not bad old man." Steve joker behind me. I smiled and prepared to throw again. I exhaled slowly and threw. I missed the bottles.

"Oooh, soooo close!" The carnival worker nearly yelled in my ear. I rolled my eyes and readied myself for my last throw.

"Go Danny!" Steve yelled happily. I arched myself and threw. I hit down 4 bottles. Steve squealed as the carnival worker gave me the giant stuffed panda bear. I boasted my proud smile as I handed the prize to Steve. He gave me a cheek peck and giggled like a child as he admired his bear.

"Mr. Devito?" A familiar voice called. It was the nurse I had daily visits with. The one who comes to tell me that visiting hours have unfortunately come to an end. I nodded and got her hint. I gave Steve a soft gentle kiss and headed out the door to my car. I tuned into the radio where a song Steve was rather fond of played. I drowned out all other noises and listened intently to the music. It was peaceful and relaxing. I even smiled to myself. I hummed along to the music and continued drowning out all distractions. In fact, I did such a good job tuning everything out, just focusing on the music, that I didn't even notice my light was still red. A blue pick-up barreled towards me as I ran the light. Before I knew it my car was flipping through the air, horns were blasting, and glass shattered. The car crashed down to the ground roughly with a bang. Everything feels cold. Numbness consumes me.

"Oh god. Someone call 911!" I heard a muffled voice scream.

I can't move. I can't speak. I can barely think about anything other than the pain. Out of the corner of my eye I saw red and blue flashing lights.

"Stay with me sir. We're gonna get you out of here. He's losing a lot of blood!" Another muffled voice called. I closed my eyes and drifted off into a numb, painful slumber.

When I wake I'm completely surrounded by darkness. I'm laying on the ground in all white pajamas. Where was I?

"Hello?" I called nervously, my voice cracking.

"Hello Danny," a booming voice echoed through the darkness. "Your life on Earth has come to an end. Welcome to the Void."
