Chapter 21
"Why are you doing this?" Audrey asked in distress leaning against the chair. Ethan had found where Justin was and they decided to pay him a visit and interrogated him. They went to his workplace at the small office where he worked as the manager. Justin seemed to age tremendously and his attire looked worn out.
"You made me lose my job! My wife and kids left me because of you! I had nothing because of you! And I will make sure that you'll feel what it's like to have nothing!" He voiced out in rage pointing at Audrey.
"I'm sorry that you have to go through that." she said with penitent expression.
"What! You have done nothing to him. You shouldn't apologize for his misfortune and especially after what he did! He doesn't deserve it!
I do not regret firing you knowing what you're capable of doing now. And I will make sure to sue you for defamation and for intentional arsenic poisoning! I will make sure you pay for what you did!" Ethan fumed defending her and stood face to face with the person who caused all this trouble. He knew exactly how Justib must've felt and how desperate he was, but what he did was beyond pathetic and hopeless. Justin had admitted to purposely poisoning the food after he was shown the footage of him at the event that day. He recently found out that Audrey had opened a catering business and has been following her for a few months trying to get his revenge. It was the perfect opportunity knowing that she was catering to Loyd's event and he planned his deceitful act.
"You will hear from my attorney!" He affirmed taking her arm and leading her towards his car. They sat in the car as his driver drove back to her place.
"He was wrong, very wrong, but he was just a desperate man who had lost everything. I don't think you should be that harsh, Ethan." She said.
"That kind of people doesn't deserve to be pitied, Audrey. Sabotaging you won't bring his family back. He deserve to be treated as such." He insisted still confused at her reaction.
"What if you're at his position? Not everyone is as privileged as you are. Imagine his own wife left him because he's penniless. Family is supposed to be there at his lowest point in life. It's not a revelation that he act out of his desperation." She pointed out staring straight into his blue eyes showing the sincerity in her while he was caught off guard with the remarks she just pointed out. It made him re-think of what his father has been saying all these years.
"It baffles me how your mind think, Audrey." He brushes his hair with his hands while keeping his eyes on hers, she eventually looked away blushing.
"Have dinner with me, Audrey." He asked staring intently at her hazel eyes when she braved herself to look up. She opened her mouth but didn't know what to say.
"Tomorrow. I'll pick you up at 8." He continued.
"Okay..." She said diffidently. This was the first time he asked her on a date aside from the Loyd's event. She did not know what to expect from this relationship, whether they are just friends or perhaps could be something more. She was skeptical knowing his womanizer behaviour and superior status. She was afraid to get hurt as she has never opened up to any man before. She had been too busy studying, working and starting a new business. Another reason was because she lacks the confidence in herself and always felt apprehensive to give relationship a try.
They reached to Audrey's house and they bid goodbye. She went inside the house skipping into the dining room grinning widely.
"What has gotten into you? Has the lawsuit been dropped? What! Stop smiling like that it's really creeping me out, Dree! Seriously stop!" Ava revolted continuously tapping on her friend's shoulder.
"I'm going on a date. I'm going on a date with my ex-boss. He asked me out! Tomorrow!" She squealed in excitement.
"Wow! Good for you, Dree. About time you find a husband." She teased munching on the salted popcorn on her couch.
"Not a husband, Ava! It's a date, it's defined as going out with someone in whom one is romantically interested." She took off her shoes and sat beside her friend taking a handful of popcorn for herself.
"Or sexually interested... uhh la la... someone's getting laid! Alright newbie, should I tell you how it will feel like at first? It will feel slightly-" She continued ignoring her friend.
"Gosh! Stop! Stop it seriously. We haven't even kissed Ava! And I am not planning on doing it yet either, so stop." She rebuffed covering her ears.
"Anyway, we found the person who sabotaged my food. It's Justin, can you imagine I used to work alongside with him! He admitted to the crime when we showed him the footage. He was fired by Ethan few years ago and he blamed me that he lost his job. I can't believe someone could do something like that. I mean he told us that his wife and kids left him when he lost his job but I can't comprehend what could drive him into actually committing a crime. I feel bad for him that he lost his family with no money but I just can't seem to fathom how a person can destroy another person. His drive to do that is beyond my grasp." She explicated, trying hard to understand.
"You're too naïve, Dree. Seriously, the world is not as good as you think and you're just too kind for your own good." She replied. Audrey have heard that before as Ethan warned her. Perhaps Ethan was just trying to protect her, she thought.
