It was a Friday in Early March and I was in Algebra class before heading to lunch period. My teacher, Mrs. Bruins, was giving the class a daily lesson in Trigonometry as in 'Opposite over Hypotenuse' and such. My class and I LOVE Mrs. Bruins. She's that kind of teacher who understands our frustration, is very patient with us and if anyone ever got stuck on a Math Problem, she helps them solve it using examples related to things they like. That's why we love her. Plus, she's a fun teacher who would make us laugh. "Can anyone tell me what is the cosine for the triangle in Question 6?" She asked before letting out a cough. My classmate, Craig timidly raised his hand while his twin brother, Tyler shot up his.
"Tyler?" said Mrs. Bruins picking him to answer the question. Tyler lowers his hand and responds "The adjacent for the right triangle is 27 units while the Hypotenuse is 31. And since Cosine is Adjacent over hypotenuse, the answer is 27 over 31." "That is correct, Tyler. Well done." Mrs. Bruins said. Craig and Tyler are the two smartest students in my class. Craig is shy, quieter, and more polite while Tyler is more serious, louder and more... direct. Okay, Tyler is a bit of a Smart Aleck. Anyway, class was almost over and Ms. Bruins was handing out our homework. "Your homework for tonight is to fill out your worksheets." She coughs again. "Excuse me, sorry about that. Now before you go, I have an announcement to make." She exclaimed. She walked to the front of the class. "The school will be hosting our annual Talent Show in April. If anyone wants to perform onstage, they can sign up and will have plenty of time to practice for the show. Students may also be allowed to use the auditorium during Study Hall to practice onstage." Ms. Bruins said out loud. And then, RIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNGGGG!!! That was the bell for Lunch period. Class was dismissed. I was walking down the corridor alongside my two best friends, Andrea and Frida. Frida is a redheaded girl who enjoys dancing like I do. I've known this energetic girl since elementary school along with Andrea. Andrea is a strong and athletic girl. She is on the Girl's Volleyball, Basketball, and Wrestling teams. Andrea is also a talented dancer. While we were heading to the courtyard for lunch, there was the bulletin board covered in various papers and flyers, but what really caught our attention was a large colorful poster placed right in the middle.
The poster had large letters that read "MOONBROOK HIGH SCHOOL IS HOSTING OUR ANNUAL TALENT SHOW! PERFORM YOUR TALENT ONSTAGE! ONLY ONE WINNER WILL RECIEVE A BIG CASH PRIZE. Sign up week: Friday March 10-Friday March 17 during Study Period and after school hours. The opening Night of the show will be April 30th at 6:30 PM." After reading that poster, I was excited. I took out my phone and snapped a photo. "Nora, girl, you gotta enter the talent show! You've been a talented dancer for a LONG time." Andrea said to me. "Yeah. Why not have the three of us enter together and create a dance choreography?! Just imagine what song we can dance to or what outfits we can wear!" Frida said. She and Andrea are just as excited as I am. What Frida said to me sounded like a great idea. "I'm in for a choreography!" I said. "Count me in!" Andrea yelled. We high five each other before heading to the courtyard. On our way there, we run into the three most popular, snobbiest, meanest girls in the entire school. Jessica Evergreen is the leader of three. Her family is known for their most popular business across the Nation, 'Evergreen Makeup Products'. Not only is she rich, but she is rotten, bratty and manipulative. Did mention she's the captain of the Cheerleading squad? Rebecca Mahogany is the second mean girl. She is the one who would start fights all the time. She would mostly finish a fight unscathed because her father owns one of the most popular private dojos in the city. Rebecca is pretty much a Black belt in Martial Arts. And the third mean girl is Veronica Stone and she is known for spreading rumors and insults about other students in this school and would post them on various social media apps on her phone. Jessica glared at me with her trademark mean-girl stare.
"You? Perform in this year's Talent show with Fatty and Ms. Spazzy? Please! I can't even see one bit of talent in you alone, Loser." She said while pointing at me with her pink fingernails. "What's the point of you three performing in the show if you're not even gonna win?" Andrea did not like being mocked for her weight. She was always active in sports and she didn't eat that much junk food. She's just Plus size. Frida did not like being mocked for having ADHD. It's not her fault she was born that way. Andrea rolled up her sleeves, ready to throw fists while Frida and I were ready to hold her back. "You asked for it!" Andrea yelled before attemping to pound Jessica and her snobby posse. "Andrea, don't!" Frida said. "It's not worth it!" I said. Jessica and her friends walked away laughing. "Losers!" Veronica called out to us. Andrea calmed down, but still maintained her glare at them. I sighed. "Let's just go to lunch." I said.
