Edna Johnson is a young mother who's had to learn survival the hard way. Abandoned by her parents and betrayed by the man she once loved, she's determined to give her child the love and stability she never had-even if it means standing alone.
Alex L...
EDNA'S POV Alex's housekeeper had made pancakes, and I must admit—they looked really good. I didn't really like the idea of not making Peter's breakfast myself. But since I was in a hurry to leave the house, I'd just have to deal. I've had to deal with a lot already, so what's a little pancake, anyway?
I got dressed in a pair of jeans and a tee. Like other lucky mothers, I had been able to get my body back to its former shape, and I couldn't be more grateful—especially since I hated exercise. Seriously, anything that made me sweat was a no.
Although, after the incident with Alex, I soon found out I could run for hours... if it meant getting him out of my head. And I did. It worked—until everything rushed back the moment I stepped into that house or touched anything that reminded me of him.
I got downstairs just in time to see Peter finishing the last of his breakfast. He looked so happy—it was almost heartbreaking to think he'd be going back to school after summer break. I just needed this sham of a marriage to be over, and then I'd go back to pretending Alex Laurent didn't exist. It was almost tempting to believe it myself. Almost.
I grabbed some toast and a carton of juice.
After I finished eating, I cleared the dishes. I needed to leave the house before Alex emerged from wherever he was hiding.
"Morning, everyone," Alex's voice boomed from the kitchen area.
"Why does everyone abhor me so much..." I muttered under my breath.
"What was that?" Alex asked, grabbing a slice of toast for himself.
"I... it was nothing," I stuttered.
Peter ran out of the kitchen when he saw a dog run past the house. Obviously, Alex didn't remember that I was allergic. Just like he didn't remember anything that concerned me.
Since I wasn't planning to stay here long, I was going to avoid the dog altogether. I wasn't going to tell him about the allergy—obviously. Besides, it wasn't a serious kind. I could ignore it.
"The lawyers will be here today with all the papers. Everything has been organized. All you have to do is sign," he informed me.
"Okay," I replied in a bored, defeated tone.
"There won't be any sort of celebration. I'd hate attention at a time like this."
"Okay," I said again, in the same dull tone.
"Good."
"Good."
He tightened his fist and stormed out of the kitchen.
Wait—did I say something wrong? Was I supposed to beg? It's not like it would change anything, would it?
I've already accepted my fate, and he's the one who isn't happy? What do you want, Alex Laurent? I said in my head.

ALEX'S POV I stormed into my room and slammed the door behind me. I hit my clenched fist against the bedside table.
"Arrrghhhh!" I screamed.
Why does she act so innocent? Like she didn't mess my life up. Like she still doesn't owe me an apology for the pain she caused me.
What did I ever do to you, Edna, to deserve what happened to me—and my company?
I thought this fake marriage would hurt her, but I can see she's getting used to the charade. And the feelings she gives me whenever I get close to her...
Damn those feelings.
"Alex, you need to get your head straight," I said to myself.
I needed this marriage over with. I needed Edna out of my life—for good.
⸻
WRITER'S POV The lawyers came over to the house, and both Alex and Edna signed the papers, finalizing everything regarding the contract.
⸻
ALEX'S POV Soon, I'd finally get my shares from my father's company—before his vulture of a brother came to claim everything my father worked for.
Ding, ding, ding! My phone rang, interrupting my thoughts.
"Sir, you need to get down here now," Cole, my assistant, said urgently.
