A city in ruins

The early morning frost nipped at my toes, signalling the sun would soon blaze the sky... I turned around to see bibas to my left and mikalah to my right. I sat up slowly and looked around and thought to myself, this is the last time I'll be here... I went onto the roof and watched the sun begin it's daily ascent upon the world. The warm autumn breeze cherished my legs. I heard a movement down below and moments later Alex and Lucy came up. "Good morning girls, sleep well?" I asked, "yes thanks" said Lucy, Alex replied with a silent nod, "then Alex spoke, "Fraser we're leaving today"," well I can't stop you can I?"," no sorry, we don't want any of your supplies or the tank, all we need Is one AUG, and some water and food and a hunting knife". Lucy said that she thought it would be best to leave now and cause less of a disturbance later on, I agreed and helped them get their gear and waved them off, they passed out of view and seconds later I heard someone behind me, they put their Hand on my shoulder and said, "it's ok less people to worry about", it was my best and most trusted friend, cam. We prepared the tank and jeep for departure and woke everyone up, Olivia, cam, me, Mikalah, bibas, and her brother, were ready to go check the crash site. This time I was In the jeep, Mikalah and bibas were in the tank, cam was driving the jeep and I was talking to Olivia and bibas's brother, "so what's your name?" I said, "Dzenko" he said in a deep tone", Olivia immediately stole the conversation from me and I was forced to look out the window, we were at the base of the hill once more, this time though there was a blockade and lots of dead bodies, and destroyed cars, we continued past the blockade and into the main streets that led towards the city centre, Cam had worked out that the plane had crashed into the TSO research facility. A once huge mega corporation that looked into foreign chemical warfare and diseases. "Hey can we stop for a second?" I asked Cam. "No need we can't go any futher this way, just look ahead and you'll see why...". I jumped out of the jeep, and stopped the tank, we took the gas and supplies from the jeep, and hopped onto the front and sides of the tank, it got over the mountains of burnt out cars and the destroyed rubble from some destroyed building. Bibas said she could see signs of recent zombie activity here, and said we weren't too far off from a pack of about 30 or so, and also that the plane was only 3 blocks away. Either side of us stood buildings that may never come to use again, we rounded the bend to find the group of zombies, they seemed to be a tough looking Bunch, street hardened and ready to fight. Mikalah let off a round of the main cannon and took out 6 at once exploding them over the side-walks, they charged at us and everyone shot back, Mikalah for some reason hopped out of the gunner seat which bibas filled, and Mikalah sprinted over to the remaining pack of about 12 zombies which forced us to stop firing, "Mikalah! What the hell are you doing!?" I shouted, she didn't reply instead she layed waste to 5 of them then got knocked down onto her butt and was fighting in a bad position, she let out a scream as one of the zombies, pierced her chest with its teeth, and ripped her flesh from her bone, she was foolish and reckless but we still tryed to save her, we finished off the stragglers and I sat down with Mikalah, "why?" Was my last words to her, "her last breath was clear though shadowed, "it's over for me now, and I didn't want to live in this world anyway". She fell silent and so did the others, she sent a shock wave of emotion into our hearts and stopped them cold. I paced over to the tank and said to bibas coldly, "how far?" She replied that it was two blocks north of here, we got back in and set off again, Cam and Olivia were cuddling in the back of the tank, I was in the front with Dzenko driving and bibas was gunning. The plane wreck was a giant black carcass of twisted metal. "Well we got you this far, I hope your parents survived, good luck" I said and turned east towards the airport and train yards district. Bibas thanked us and said we should stay the night with them in the plane to see if anything salvageable was on board, Cam agreed it couldn't hurt to look, but I saw the sun going down and realised it wouldn't be long before the stranger ones came out, the faster ones I hadn't told anyone about, I had a pair of binoculars, and looked over the city when we were in the mansion one night, and I saw them, skinny, boney and tall, they moved swiftly without stumbling, almost into a run. In packs they could easily down the best of the best in mere seconds. I saw it happen. "Fraser? Fraser? Are you there?" Said bibas, who was slowly climbing up the wing of the dissected plane, "yeah sorry, just thinking about stuff, by the way the cockpit is where we'll sleep tonight ok?", "ok". We entered through the back of the plane and found the plane had already been looted, that much was certain, but bibas said that the upper part of the plane wasn't able to be accessed without blowing it up or using the code, which she knew. "5491" she muttered to herself when we passed over some dead bodies, charred and smoking. We moved further up toward the cockpit and found the doors bibas was talking about. She keyed In the code and opened the door to find her father dead infront of her, with her mother barely breathing next to him, "please help us, we need help", said bibas's mother, it was clear that we all knew she was done for and it was only a matter of time before she died and also only a matter of time before the sun went down. I took bibas away and cam and liv helped her futher up the plane bibas's brother had disappeared and I helped bibas's mother up, "I'm not long for this world young man, I'm going to tell you something very important, ok?"," yes, I understand", "ok" she murmured gently, "everyone is infected with the disease, when you die and your brain isn't destroyed, you turn into a zeke". I listened and couldn't believe what I was hearing, she also told me with her dying breath to tell bibas that the cure was "V-204" whatever that meant. I ran up the ship to tell everyone the news but found bibas crying and Olivia crying with her and cam trying to calm them down, once they were calm I told them what she said all besides the cure part. Bibas said in the captains quarters there should be a key to the armoury near the engine room. I carefully opened the door to find two dead men on the bed with blood all over the sheets I remembered what she had told me and found that one had been shot in the head, the other in the chest, I grabbed the keys and severed the pilots head, and walked over to the engine room where I found bibas, "best leave cam and liv alone for a bit, their busy"," can I tell you something between you and me?" I said silently, "sure, what is it?"." The cure is" V-204". " oh my god, that means that there is no known cure". "Shit!" I said a little too loudly. I opened the gun locker to find: a mp5, four grenades and a Bowie knife. Also inside was some food rations and some medical gear. "Yes! This should help us a lot!". "Where'd your brother go by the way I was meaning to ask you before but you were crying, sorry about your parents by the way". " nah, it's ok at least they didn't have to suffer that much, and my brother ran off an hour ago, I think he couldn't handle seeing our parents dead". The sun descended behind the tall buildings and I tryed to sleep for the night but couldn't, there were too many noises, we had closed the doors so nothing could get in or out until we opened it. But outside this downed metal bird were the screams of this new reality. This warped joke of a world. I tried to go back to a simpler time, back to when I was little, but that turned out the same as well, the zombies always eventually will find you, eat you and end you. It's just a matter of time really...... This time I woke up with a weird feeling like something was wrong, but what was it? I looked around to find that everyone was up, bibas was suited up with her bow and arrows and was waking me up, cam was ready with his Sniper and liv had her Bowie knife and pistol. I grabbed my AUG and grenades and medical gear and food and water bottle, and they opened the doors and the light burst through there were no zombies In sight. We jumped out out the plane back down to the street to find the tank missing and the jeep round the corner had been exploded, as if by magic suddenly bibas new what was coming next, she grabbed 2 of my 4 grenades and said "run you guys there coming". I didn't argue, by now I trusted bibas enough to know she was street smart. Me, Cam and Olivia ran east towards the train shipping yards. I looked back to see bibas pull the pins and explode in a ball of fire along with a pack of howlers (the sprinting zombie that travel in packs and howl, like wolves). And since then I never forgot her too this very day...
