Chapter Five - Keep On Walking Forward

When the Killjoys got back to camp, Beatrix collapsed onto the ground near the fire they were starting. "Good trip."
"Agreed. No dracs, no scarecrows," Poison remarked.
"So, now you're a Killjoy, huh?" Jet said, plopping down next to her. "You need a mask."
"Guess so."
Poison, the girl, and Kobra sat next to her too. "What kinda mask you want?" Kobra asked.
"Maybe something like Poison's, but it covers more of my face."
"Hmm. Cool idea." Poison dropped the sticks he was holding into the fire and they all watched it flare up.
Bee looked above her, up at the stars. "You know, it's kinda nice out here sometimes."
"Really? No way." Jet shook his head.
"But, just look up! Look at all those stars." She pointed above her head to the sky. "See, there's the North Star. And there's the Big Dipper."
"Nerd," Poison teased, shoving her playfully.
"Hey, it's helpful! You can use the North Star if you forget which way is which or you lose your compass! And the stars are good for marking where you are, and..." She trailed off.
"No need to nerd-ify us too. Chill."
"Just trying to help you survive."
They all sat in silence for another minute, staring at the fire and up at the stars. Bee started to absentmindedly sing a song she remembered at that moment.
"No way I'd let you go,
I'd never let you, no...
I don't like being so
pretentious...
No way I'd let you know,
I didn't want to go...
It didn't used to be so
endless..."
The girl looked up at her in awe. "Your singing is so cute! It's so good!"
"Huh? Oh, um... thanks. I guess. It's not very good."
"It is!"
Bee smiled to herself and kept singing, much to the girl's delight. After the song was finished, she applauded quietly and Bee blushed. "I'm not that good..."
"Don't lie to yourself! You're really great!"
"Thanks..." She laid back to stargaze.
"See that?" She pointed skyward.
"Yeah?" the girl responded.
"That's Orion."
"Who's he?"
"It's an ancient myth. If you connect the stars..." She motioned with her hands, implying lines connecting the stars together. "...it looks like a figure. And his name is Orion the Hunter."
"Whoa."
"There's lots of other constellations, too."
"Really?"
"Yeah. Want me to show you?"
"Yes!"

"Bee!" Beatrix heard the girl call out to her.
"Coming!" she yelled back.
She had gone on a walk around to think for a bit, and started walking back to camp. "Yeah?"
"The radio's on!" The Killjoys and the girl were sitting around their radio, Poison chatting with Ghoul, Jet making jokes, Kobra being the only one to laugh, and the girl, sitting cross-legged, looking up at Bee.
"Oh, gotta hear this." She sat down next to Poison and the girl, bringing a knee up to her chest. The broadcast crackled to life.
"Killjoys, it's been a rough week," the familiar voice of Dr. Death Defying rang as the Killjoys went quiet. "We lost a few lives, made a few mistakes, but it was all for a good cause. And those of you who are still walkin' this sun-bleached sands, you're strong. With only a few radios and a couple guns, we can take down a megacorporation. Keep tryin' and we'll stop the lyin'.
"In better news, a new face seems to have joined the ranks. A new face is always welcome. It's always good to look on the bright side of things, or in this case... the Sunny Side.
"That's right, tonight we welcome a brand new Killjoy, under the name Sunny Side. She's reckless, good with guns, and she's been doin' it for ten whole years. After a tragic event in her life, when her known family sadly succumbed to the hands of a Draculoid, she's been strong and brave.
Brace yourself for a brand new face if you see her out and about, 'cause she's probably not someone you've seen before, due to her hiding skills. Just keep your hands on your food, because it might disappear with her around.
In the meantime, stay strong, desert babies. We're all Killjoys at heart, and you don't need a fancy announcement to be one. Just keep on walking forward, and everything will turn out our way.
