13. Healing

As the Volturi approached, lessening the distance between us my mind raced with images of Jacob screaming in pain, nearly being killed by that sly new born. Would he be alright? Could he hold on until Carlisle could get to him? Would he still love me?

“It appears we’ve missed an entertaining fight” menaced one of the male vampires, one I did not recognise from that day in Italy, on the day of celebration of St. Marcus. Snapping me out of my daydream.

“Yes it’s not often that we are rendered as unnecessary” another Volturi member menaced.

“If you had arrived a half hour ago you would have fulfilled your purpose” Edward stated.

“Our purpose?" Feli scoffed. "What is she doing still human?” he asked, looking over at Bella wide eyed. His red eyes looked like rubies were about ready to burst out.

“The date is set” Bella spoke up. The date was set? I didn’t know this, why didn’t she tell me this?

“See sure that it is” Jane replied before fleeing the battle grounds with others following her lead. The fire that was used to burn the bodies of the killed new borns dimmed out as they walked away. Heat still gave out from the ashes and it warmed my body, I didn’t dare move until the Volturi’s thoughts were out of Edward’s reach. That warmth reminded me of Jacob I had to see him.

As I slammed my foot on the break the truck skidded across the grass of Jacob’s front lawn, I could hear his ear piercing screams coming from inside it froze my body to its core. The others winced at every indivual relief of pain Jake let out from inside as Carlisle re-broke his bones.

“The worse is over, he’ll be alright” Carlisle finally declared as he stepped out the house. “I gave him some morphin but his body temperature will burn it off soon. I’ll come back and set up a drip” he told Billy.

“Thankyou” Billy replied, showing his hand as a sign of peace as Carlisle took it in his and shook it. I guess Jacob inspired the others to make peace with the pale ones too.

“He’s asking for you” Carlisle stated as he turned to face me. I looked to Billy for a sign of approval he nodded his head and I ran in the house without hesitation.

“Jake” I breathed. The sight of him lying in the bed, half his body bandaged was to overwhelming, I broke down in tears.

“Hey” he replied in a daze. “Fly don’t cry, I’ll be alright now.”

“I know” I sniffled.

“Then why are you crying?”

“Jake this happened to you because of us… because of me” I admitted.

“You know I love you?” he asked.

“Yeah?”

“Then it was worth it”

“Why is that?”

“Because I finally got you to see that my love is real.” And he did, I gently reached over to kiss him one last time before exiting his room and leaving his home.

A WEEK LATER

“JAKE!” I yelled, running down the stairs and leaping into his arms as Charlie opened the door at the doorbell's request revealing a fully healed Jacob. He held me tightly for a solid 3 minutes before letting my feet touch the ground again. He placed a kiss on my lips and led me out the door. It was the first time he’s been allowed to leave his home and he had decided to surprise me by taking me down to the park for a picnic. We walked until we found the perfect spot and laid out the rug and cuddled as we rested against the trunk of a tree.

“August 13th” I say rested against his chest. I looked up to meet his gaze, waiting for his response but he just looked down at me confused. “That’s when Bella and Edward are getting married.”

“That’s next month” he realised.

“I know but Alice said she could have things ready by then and Bella didn’t want to wait any longer...”

“So after the wedding then Bella would be turned?”

“Yeah basically but that’s not why I’m telling you this… I was wondering if you would say yes to Edward. He was going to ask you to be one of his groomsmen and-”

“Only if I can be paired with you” Jacob interrupted, grinning his stupidly beautiful grin.

“Perfect” I giggled, nuzzling the crook of is neck as we cuddled eachother to escape the cool breeze that cam in from over the park's lake.
