Amarie:

“You crazy as hell Mari.” Melanie laughed as we walked down the street. Melanie was my best friend. We were best friends since 6th grade. I use to tease her in the 5th grade, I guess you could say I was a bully. One day we really connected and never separated since than. “Why you always gotta rash on him Mari, you know he can’t help it if he has a lisp.” She laughed harder.

“That boy is something else. He tried to talk to you didn’t he? Probably tried to hug all up on you and shit.” I said and Melanie shook her head laughing. She seemed like she wanted to dismiss the subject. “Is that why Lamar and you got into that fight?” I asked her.

“You know what my response is going to be Mari.” She said with a heavy sigh.

“That you don’t want to talk about it? I know Melanie but seriously. I say we skip town and just relocate in Mexico. Start a brand new life.” I said looking up to the sky smiling. She nudged me and laughed.

“You know I can’t do that Mari, stop talking senseless.” She chuckled. I was serious though. I wanted to get out of Boston. It was lame here, nothing here for me. Sometimes I wondered why people would even move here. Boston wasn’t shit as far as I was concerned. “You know I have a job and I’m still in college. I’m tryna make something out of myself, you know? We really didn’t have people in our lives to show us which direction to go and I feel like I’m going in the right one.” She stated.

I hated, hated, hated when Melanie brought up the fact that we didn’t have anyone growing up. I meet Melanie in a foster home. We both were raised in foster homes until we turned 18 and we decided to ditch that bitch and start our lives. She actually was going on things the right way, while I just continue to do what I wanted and not what I needed.

“I know Mel, I know. I’m proud of you.” We both locked arms and I kissed her on the check. We entered the park on this nice sunny day to see people playing Basketball, friends sitting around chilling and little kids playing up and down the park. Melanie and I decided that it would be a good day to just go out and relax. She called out of work due to her black eye. I was still upset about it, she knew I could have him killed, maybe that’s what scared her the most about it.

We sat on a bench in the basketball court so we could watch the boys play basketball. None really caught my interest but Mel was so intrigued by this scrawny, 5’8, light skin dude on the court. I mean he was cute, and my type but he wasn’t tall enough for me.

“He is so fione Mari, you think he notices me?” She said with her full attention on this dude. I was too busy texting away. I had a couple of transactions and deals that I needed to do later on today and I was just busy trying to set them up. “MARIII.” Mel yelled, grabbing my phone out my hand.

“What bitch?” I said grabbing my phone back.

“I FUCKING said.. do you think that he is looking at me?” She asked with attitude.

“Ehh, probably. Why does it matter. Just go up and talk to him.” I said and started texting away.

“Well it looks like someone has their eyes on you girl, and this brother is sexy as fuck too. DAMN. Ain’t no way he from the Bean.” Melanie said laughing enough for half the court the hear her, including the man that looks so familiar.

“Oh that’s Freckles, I met him the another night. It ain’t shit though.” I went back to texting. Didn’t I want this though, didn’t I want to see him again. Fate? No, Mari fuck fate. Just a coincidence. Melanie looked at me like I had 5 heads.

“Bitch are you fucking crazy. This nigga is fine as hell and he looking you all up and down. Act like you got some sense or I will take him.” She said winking at Freckles. He was paying her no mind. Just glaring between me and the game that he was in. I watched him play basketball. He was nice and beams of sweat dripped down his face. I caught myself biting my lip.
