Four Months Later
Chris:
I sat at the bottom of my bed in my boxer briefs, looking down at the three pictures in my hand. The three pictures reminded me of everything that I was missing out on. Another harmful reminder of what should be right here with me, what I should be doing and what I could have been doing. I just kept on looking at the pictures that I pulled out of the mailbox earlier this morning. The envelope that it came in, no address on it. Just read ‘To: Chris, From: Amarie”. I was afraid to open it, until a couple of minutes ago. And when I did open it, I saw those three pictures, no notes, just those three pictures.
I couldn’t remove my eyes from those three pictures. They were spread out in my hands as I looked at them each, individually. They all looked similar and quite odd. Those tiny legs, those tiny arms, small torso and the head looked so big compared to the rest of the body. Small button nose and the eyes were closed, like it was sleeping. I tried to observe every detail, every detail that I noticed. I looked at the top of the picture and Mari’s name was printed on the top. The ultrasound pictures of my baby, our baby sat in my hands. Four months later and I was sitting here with ultrasound pictures, the only thing that I had from her. Her being six months pregnant and I still didn’t have her in my arms.
“She’s beautiful.” The girl said leaning against my dresser. She was holding the picture frame that I had sitting face down on the dresser. She was looking at the picture of Mari and I in the frame, rubbing her index finger over the glass, wiping off the dust that had collected in the corner of the frame. She stood there in her bra and pantie set. I wasn’t aware that she had awaken or even got out of the bed. I was too lost into these ultrasound pictures. I just looked at her as I notice her look down at the pictures. She then slowly looked back up at me. “How many months is she?” She asked. I looked back down in the pictures, getting distracted and lost in my thoughts once again. I felt the bed shift a little and I quickly looked up at her sitting down right next to me, looking at the pictures too.
“She’s …. uhm.” I started but my throat got clogged up, like if I said anything further I would just lose it. She looked at me with a worried expression.
“You don’t have to talk about it Bre—” She started.
“Six months, she’s …. six months.” I blurted out. Counting down the months until my baby was born, not that I would be able to see or hold them, but just knowing that they would be in this world. This cold cruel world.
“It’s a girl.” She said smiling. I looked at her in a confused expression, meshing my eyebrows together. She giggled a little bit.
“Look at the third picture, she doesn’t have a … you know what …” She said and started to chuckle. I grin and it eventually turned into a smile. A real genuine smile, that I have made in quite sometime. She looked at me, smiling back. I looked down at the pictures, still smiling. My babygirl.
She got up and walked back over to the dresser, picking up picture frame and sitting it up right, instead of having it sitting face down like I have been sitting it for the last couple of months. She leaned against the dresser and I could just feel her eyes on me.
“What?” I asked, still looking at the ultrasound pictures.
“Nothing …. just … she’s going to be beautiful. Just like her. Probably have your freckles, her light brown eyes.” She said looking back at the picture. I looked up at her.
“Yeah, she’ll probably look just like Mari.” I said squeezing my eyes shut, vetoing the tears that were forming causing my eyes to burn. When I opened my eyes she was looking down at the floor at her feet. Rubbing both of her big toes together, fumbling with one another. I put the pictures in the envelope and stood up, stretching my entire body out. I looked down at the condom wrapper that was on the floor, picking it up and throwing it in the trash can. She watched my every move from the corner of her eyes as I pulled on my sweat pants.
