A/N: I'M SORRY

————-
It was time.

You looked at Bucky with an excited grin on your face and he returned it with a soft smile of his own. He hadn't seen you this happy and healthy in a long, long time, not since the snap wiped out half of everything in existence.

You zipped up your catsuit, filling the hidden holsters with your guns and weapons and hooking on additional spears and tasers onto your utility belt. Your hair was tugged back in a tight ponytail, the thud of your combat boots echoing in the halls as made your way to the ship waiting for you on the helipad.

Bucky caught up with you and laced his fingers through yours, as you both stepped on, hand in hand. You glanced at him once you'd both strapped yourselves in and he gave you a reassuring nod. He reeled back a funny looking crank and then pushed it forward again, causing the ship to buzz to life.

You glanced at the Avengers compound as you hovered about it, watching it disappear from your sight as the ship suddenly lurched upwards, into the vast blue sky. Bucky hit a button on the control pad, causing the ship to barrel forward at an unimaginable speed and suddenly the two of you were in deep space.

He let go of the lever he was holding, and let out a deep breath, glancing at you and giving you a warm smile. You were shaking slightly, nervous and jittery with anxiousness but also content because of the warm feeling of hope that had grown unknowingly in your chest. This was your chance to make things right.

"Hey, Y/N, what's going on?" Steve's voice buzzed through the comms of the space shuttle

"We're good, on course," You responded and you heard Steve sigh on the other end.

"Okay, great, Vormir is where your headed, that's where you'll get the soul stone," He reminded you.

"I know, Stevie," You glanced at Bucky shooting him a toothy grin, "We'll be okay,"

****
Your face scrunched up as you stepped off. The purple everywhere reminded you an awful lot of someone you didn't quite want to remember and the ground was muddy, covered in some sort of thick goopy, slime.

"Eugh,"

Bucky just shook his head, "Come on, this way I think,"

He clambered through a ledge among two surprisingly symmetrical rocks. You followed suit, climbing and then jumping down. The sky was dark, and setting off a not good feeling within you. You shrugged it off, as Bucky grabbed your wrist and tugged you further forward with him.

"Where are we supposed to go get it?" He mumbled and you shrugged, squinting your eyes to get a better look of your surroundings. A strong wind blew across the vast plain in front of you, accompanied by a floating, hooded figure. A macabre specter that followed the breeze like a shadow of death.

"I know what you've come in search of James, son of George and Y/N daughter of F/N,"

The figure drew into the light, a peek through its hood revealing its identity. Bucky let out a soft gasp.
"The red skull,"

"If you know what we want, tell us how we get it," You said in response and it looked as if the red skull grew darker in shape and form when he said the next five words.

"A soul for a soul, you must sacrifice someone you love," Is all he said before he drifted away into somewhere beyond.

You felt the words ring in your head, as you stumble onto a nearby rock, your heart hammering against your chest. You knew what you had to do, but you were afraid. Not of sacrificing yourself, oh no, for Bucky you'd risk it all in a heartbeat. You were scared he would take the leap first.

You could see the lining of the cliff. It was so close by you could just seer over its ending with  ease. It was a small price to pay, for the greater good. You wanted to fix everything? This was how to do it.

"You can't seriously be thinking I'm gonna let you do what you're about to do," Bucky said as he leaned in front of you.

You laughed, tears welling up in your eyes, as your fingers found and cupped his face, "What choice do we have?"

"There is another choice,"

You shook your head, "You know I can't let you do that,"

"You're being stupid, I have nothing to live for except you, you have so much more to do in life, I've lived mine out and I haven't been the best,"

"You're being irrational, and you know it, the world needs you, Steve needs you," You standing up, pulling him with you, "I'm trying to save your life, you idiot, you're doing so well,"

He rests his forehead against you, tears are already streaking down his cheeks, "I'm sorry, I can't let you do that," he says, as he wraps his arm around your waist to tase you. You react quickly, elbowing his arm to knock the taser out and kick him in the stomach, sending him flying back and crashing against a wall. He lands with a 'thud!' and skids down.

You begin running, vision blurred by your own tears, to the edge of a cliff. You know it's a steep drop and yet you feel no hesitation nor fear. You have to do this, you know it's up to you. You run faster, your heart hammering heavily in your chest so hard you feel as if it's booming loud enough for everyone to hear it's rhythm. You don't give yourself time to brace, you just jump without thinking, hurtling through air, falling through space and await the crash.

It never comes.

You open your eyes to find yourself suspended in mid air. You glance up frantically to find Bucky, outstretched over the opening of the cliff, clutching your wrist with a vice like grip and not thinking of letting go anytime soon.

"Let me go," You say to him, he shakes his head in response.

"I can't,"

"You have to," You yell back, trying to wriggle out of his grasp, "Let me go, buck,"

"No we can figure something else out-

"It's the only way," You whisper, and watch him look around for some sort of help, "It's okay, I'll be with you always, the world needs you more than I need you,"

"That doesn't make sense," He says through labored breathing, his voice raspy from the pain of having to control himself from screaming.

"It will, once you let go,"

"There's no way I can-

"You have to," You say to him, trying to reason,
"Listen to me, it will be okay, everything will be okay, but you have to let me go first,"

He squeezes his eyes shut, shaking his head vigorously.

"It's the only way, let me go,"

You force the soles of your feet against the edge of the cliff, pushing with such vigor that your hand slips from Bucky's grasp. You feel the wind whip your face as you tumble down, the last think you see being the flash of a bright light before it all goes dark.
