I woke up to her gathering her clothes together. My face immediately turned red. All she had on was her undergarments, and she had a beautiful body. She was very lean and fit. She looked up to see me blushing and she bursted into laughter.
“What’s wrong? Never seen a girl change before, Rite?” She said with mocking laughter, making me blush even harder.
Shut up was all I had to say back to that. I’m a damn genius at comebacks.
She stuck her tongue out at me and mockingly reached back to take off her bra, which made me blush harder, and made her laugh even more.
“Can you please not?!”
“I mean, I could, but this is way too much fun.”
I sighed and ended up averting my eyes away from her. It was wake-up, after all.
I got up to change into my jumpsuit as well, and I decided to use the bathroom to change.
After I finished getting dressed into this hideous light blue jumpsuit, I walked out to the cafeteria for breakfast. Breakfast here was much better than back at my house in the Ponama district. My district was poor as hell, and my family barely made it. In fact, most of the kids in the Ponama district were skinnier than I am, and we rarely ate. Hell, we had at least one or two deaths a year from starvation. I’ve lost many good friends to it.
Thinking about my old district spiked a question in my head. “Hey, Nikol, what district did you come from?”
I got a long silence in reply, then, “Apenture.”
Apenture was the third richest district. They had the highest security, and they were always well fed. Most of the kids that came from there were battle trained, and someone you would not want to meet. There were rumors that their entire district were stuck up snobs, and that they fed their children to their livestock. I never did believe that second rumor, though.
“You’re kidding, right?”
“No. Dylen, Awre, Nishta, Luke, and I are all from Apenture.”
Five kids from one district was a lot in one year. Typically, you only had maybe two or three, almost never five.
“Why five?”
“Apenture has a lot of 16 year olds, I guess,” she said with a shrug.
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Anyways, what district are you from?”
“Ponama.”
“Oh, that’d explain the questions.”
I looked away, trying to end the conversation as soon as possible, wishing I had never brought it up to begin with.
“Rite?”
“Yeah?”
“I’m sorry that you have had a bad past, but I know you’ll have a better future. You’re extremely well skilled. I know you’ll make it.”
“Thanks, Nikol, really.”
She gave me a genuine smile and hugged me. That long, loving hug again. Damn, this is a nice hug.
