I was wringing out the washcloth in the sink when I felt him come up behind me. His body gently pressed against the feathers of my wings, which I still couldn't retract. His breath was warm against the nape of my neck, goosebumps erupting down my spine like a shockwave.
"There was a time when you said you wouldn't walk away from me. Especially after I said something like that," he breathed softly.
I clenched my jaw, pressing my lips together. After he'd said what he did, I'd stood up and walked away. Like a coward. I couldn't face him like that. This was all too much for me. My mind was telling me to run while my heart tugged me back to him. He had completely betrayed me. I had no trust that he wouldn't do it again. But when he said things like that- all of my logic went out the window. So I had to separate myself from him.
"That was before. I wouldn't have walked away from you, ever, if you could've just kept it in your pants," I grumbled.
"I know. And I hope one day you will be able to forgive me," he said softly.
I rolled my eyes and pushed past him without making eye contact, walking back into the bedroom. I could hear his heart beat behind me as he followed.
"I think I'd like that ride home now. Can you get me a taxi or an Uber or something?" I huffed, flicking my hair over my shoulder and turning around impatiently.
"Alright, point taken. We don't have to talk about us anymore. Just- please stay. You still need your wing reset," Grey's eyes traveled from mine to my wing, which dragged behind me numbly on the floor.
"I don't want you to reset it. I'll ask Allison. Or Siena," I shook my head adamantly.
"Allison would probably pass out at the mere sight of your wing, and Siena is down and out for the rest of the day, I'm guessing. I'm all you got," Grey took a step towards me, narrowing his eyes slightly.
"I'll ask Suriel or Michael," I shrugged.
"They're still trying to manage the news story and publicity. We're lucky we don't have any Awakened souls on our hands. The last one I had didn't turn out too well," Grey snickered playfully.
I folded my arms sternly across my chest and raised an eyebrow. "You're not resetting my wing."
"Come on, Greene. You know I've seen my fair share of fights and battles. I know how to reset it. It'll only hurt a little bit if I do it, and even if Suriel or Michael found time to come, they might not do it correctly, let alone get here within the next few hours," Grey smirked, his eyes twinkling as he took another step towards me.
"Then I'll wait and take my chances," I retorted.
"I let you clean my wounds. It's your turn to let me do the same for you. Don't you trust me?" He creased his brows together.
"No. I don't," I replied, my voice ice cold.
Grey paused, his eyes locked on mine. His pupils dilated a little, irises flashing a little fluorescent blue, before returning to normal.
"What do you mean you don't trust me?" He scowled, his voice low.
"How on Earth can you expect me to trust you after what you've done to me?" I narrowed my eyes at him.
"I cheated on you, yes, but that doesn't mean you can't trust me. I just almost died for you. How else can I prove to you that I'm still the same man you fell in love with, that you once trusted with your soul?" Grey threw his hands up in the air in exasperation.
"You can't. Just let me wait for Suriel or Michael," I replied coolly.
"You're being ridiculous," Grey rolled his eyes.
