Quick Author's Note: This might be one of my most favorite one shots I've written. There's angst and fluff and wow.
Y/N's POV
You tossed and turned in your bed, unable to calm your restless mind. It had been a month since you went along with your friends on an incredibly risky mission to rescue Bakugo and ever since then you had trouble sleeping. Nightmares plagued you, and panic attacks would bring you back to the time you were just meters away from the League and their leader. You clutched your chest, feeling all the anxiety and pressure bubbling back up. That night, and the feelings that came with it, were permanently etched into your brain.
What was even worse was that you told nobody what you were struggling with, especially the people who had accompanied you on the mission. They had all seemed so strong, and acted like they had forgotten and that things were back to normal. You wanted to be like that. So you never said a word, even when people had asked if you were okay.
Small Flashbacks...
"Y/N are you alright? You haven't been yourself lately," Uraraka asked with a concerned voice.
You gave a half smile, "I've never been better..."
"The dark circles under your eyes tell a different story," said Todoroki.
You grimaced, he always noticed the little things.
"If you need to talk about anything Y/N. We're always here for you," Iida said pushing up the bridge of his glasses.
You looked back down at your food, "Thanks guys... but I'm fine I swear. I'm just tired from school, that's all..."
They shared a look and you could tell they hadn't bought your lie.
~~~
"Y/N are you sleeping in class? This is highly unusual of you," said Mr. Aizawa from the front of the room.
All the eyes in the room turned and looked at you, making your face heat up. You tugged at your collar nervously.
"Sorry Mr. Aizawa... it won't happen again," you replied.
He gave you a stern look before going back to his lecture. You sighed, staring back down at your textbook.
"Something's distracting you. I can tell," whispered a monotone voice next to you.
You looked up in shock, meeting the heterochromatic eyes of Todoroki. He held your gaze for a few seconds, before you turned away and looked up at the board.
~~~
You backed up against the wall of the common room taking in one deep breath after another as a panic attack gripped your brain. You couldn't remember what had triggered it, all that you knew was that you were scared. Scared, of someone walking in and seeing you like this. You forced yourself to get up and walk. Fear and adrenaline coursed through your veins as you stumbled your way back to your dorm room. Tears stung your eyes and your breathing became rugged.
You fumbled with the door handle, before grabbing it and shoving the door open with a force so hard you fell down on your knees. You crumpled in on yourself and let out a quiet cry, completely unaware that a pair of heterochromatic eyes was watching from around the corner...
Small Flashbacks Over...
Y/N's POV
Screw this, you thought as you tugged on a sweatshirt and rolled out of bed. You trudged across your room and opened the door to the hallway, taking a glance around to see if anyone else was awake. Once you saw the coast was clear, you silently stepped out of your room and closed the door. You made your way to the kitchen and turned on the lights, grabbing a mug from the cupboard. Throughout this whole ordeal you had found out that warm milk calmed you down the most. It created this warm reassuring feeling in your gut, which was something you hadn't experienced in a while. You opened the fridge and rummaged around. Once you finally found what you were looking for, you closed the door... only to find a pair of heterochromatic eyes staring right at you. You gasped and jumped back, only to relax when you realized it was just Todoroki.
"Todo, what are you doing here?" you asked.
He shrugged, "I could ask you the same thing."
You sighed and turned your attention back to your cup of milk, "You want to join me?"
"I'm already here so I might as well," he replied grabbing another mug from the cupboard.
You filled up both mugs and put them in the microwave, setting the time to a minute and a half. The buzz and hum filled the silence of the kitchen as Todoroki leaned against the counter and stared at you.
"Why are you up so late Y/N?" he asked all of a sudden.
You hesitated, "I... can't sleep."
"But why?" he pressed further.
"Um, homework..." you replied trying to keep your voice steady.
He grabbed your wrist and spun you around to face him, "That's a lie and you know that. You're always on top of school work."
You felt a spike of anxiety, "It's nothing. I'm fine."
"No you're not."
Your eyes began to sting and you sucked down a breath, "Why do you even care? I don't and it'll probably blow over in a week. I'll be okay just-"
"I know that tone Y/N. You're trying to convince yourself that you have everything under control. You're trying to bury your problems when really, you've just been distancing yourself from everyone around you. Trust me, I've been there and it's not fun. But it doesn't have to be this way. Someone a while ago helped me see that, and now I want to pay it forward. So tell me... Y/N. Why are you up so late?" he interrupted staring into your eyes with a gaze so intense you couldn't look away.
Your breath hitched. It felt like a switch had been flipped somewhere inside of you. Like a crack in a dam, that you had convinced yourself wasn't real, finally snapped and was now releasing a flood of emotions throughout your body.
You let out a cry and threw your arms around Todoroki. He tensed up at first, not expecting such a reaction, but then relaxed and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you close. You buried your face in his shoulder, hoping he didn't care that you were wetting the fabric of his shirt with your tears.
"It's okay Y/N... I'm here just breathe," he said as soothingly as he could.
"I-I'm s-sorry..." you managed to say in between sobs.
"For what?"
"For not... being strong e-enough," you sputtered.
He ran his hand along your back reassuringly, "What do you mean Y/N? Your one of the strongest people I know."
You shook your head and let go of him, tears still running down your face, "Ever since we rescued Bakugo... I've been having these nightmares. Horrible images of Midoriya's plan not working. Most of them end in me loosing you... or our other friends. Sometimes I even die... and then I wake up in a cold sweat. I thought I could handle it on my own... but then I started having panic attacks. I would've told all of you, but you all just seemed so... so strong. You acted like everything was okay... meanwhile I was falling apart by the second! I didn't want to be weak! So I kept my mouth shut and-"
He pulled you into another hug, this one tighter than the last, "Y/N, you are anything but weak. I know you may not realize it now, but your strength grows in the moments when you think you can't go on but you keep going anyway. I'm sorry you suffered in silence for so long, but you have me and the rest of our friends. We're here for you, and that will never change."
You nodded and shut your eyes pressing your head against his chest. It felt like a huge burden had been lifted off of your shoulders as you stood there, still wrapped up in his arms.
You smiled and met his eyes, "Thank you Todoroki. I didn't realize how badly I needed to hear that until now."
He nodded and opened his mouth to say something, when all of a sudden the microwave beeped. You blushed realizing how close your faces were to each other.
"Can we... do this again sometime? Just you and me?" he asked, staring at you with a new intensity.
You nodded, "Of course Todo. That sounds wonderful."
