???  POV

3 hours after Luna's escape

"I'm broken, so are you. We are numb together. I will break everyone in this world to make you happy." His thoughts slowly became depressing mumbles. "Let me make you happy, please. Let me make you happy the way you make me." I smiled at his misery. "Why is life so cruel?" His eyes that were once shinny became extremely dull. The girl had an incredible power over him, so much so that I thought he would physically kill himself over her rejection. What did he see in her? She would be an amazing ally to have not to mention her knack for attacks both defensive and offensive. Although, why for a wife? She doesn't seem like the type to want to settle down. 'What's with this weirdo?' I thought to myself. "Hey, um James?" He looked up slightly from his ever so depressing monologue. "Y-yea, #$%@?" he sniffed. I took a deep breath before I asked him something I knew I would regret, "why her?" He looked at me with a blank and confused stare. "W-why her-r?" He repeated back. I nodded. His face lit up brighter than New York City. "Cause' she's perfect!" He stood up from his chair and his posture became one of an excited little boy. He realized what he was doing and sat back down. "She's tough and smart!" I admired his expression as he stared at the floor. He genuinely seemed in love. "And she's beautiful!" His expression began changing. "Her hair smells like lavender and smoke." I became incredibly uncomfortable. His mouth hung open breathing heavily and his pupils were extremely dilated. "She's bold and powerful," he paused to breathe before continuing. "She's way more social than I could ever be. And she understands what it means to protect someone!"

His face became more and more insane looking as his mouth curved into a sinister smile. He looked up from the ground and stared directly at me. "She's the only thing that matters in this world." I felt a chill down my spine as I broke out in a cold sweat. "AND HER BLOOD TASTES LIKE STRAWBERRIES!" His affection seemed more than love at this point. He stared into my eyes as if he was looking for something. A reaction perhaps? His heavy breathing quickly descended to a deep pant. Once I pulled myself out of my trance I noticed he was drooling. I was afraid to point it out to his so I let him figure it out instead. "H-how long have you known her again?" I asked desperate to change the subject. "GOING ON 13 YEARS!" I gulped. "When did you fall in love with her?" He gave me a look that answered my question instantly. 'Who is this man?' I thought to myself. "Aw my apologies I must've gone on one of my rants again" he smiled sweetly as if none of that ever happened. I nodded. 'What have I gotten myself into?' I ruffled my hair so it didn't stand on my neck. "Hey man just wait until I marry her! you're gonna be my best man, dude." Was that even a position I wanted anymore? He jokingly punched me in the shoulder as he got up and left, leaving me practically shaking. Once he shut the door behind him I attempted to stand up but my knees buckled triggering me to collapse. Tears swelled my eyes. 'Who is he anymore?' My head filled with unanswered questions as I slowly caught my breath.

"Why am I working for him again?" I asked a question I didn't quite know the answer to. 'When did it start?' I thought to the beginning. 'How long have I known him?' I attempted to reach the depths of my memories. The first thing I can remember... a voice? I closed my eyes in hopes of some assistance with my memories. 'Bang...bang...bang. Gunshots?'  My eyes shot open as I tried to wrap my head around the confusion. Suddenly I could feel my cheeks being coated by something. I put my hand against it and felt a cold salty liquid. "Tears?" I asked confused. "What's going on?" Today has been one where my whole reality seems to be coming down on me. "What is it that I've forgotten? Who even is James? Who am I?" But most importantly, "Who was I?" As far as I could remember there was always James by my side, even during my childhood. I grew up with him... so where did I come from? As I was in the middle of my midlife crisis, James opened the door he left through and popped his head in. "Hey, man it's almost time to eat. After that you have to get going so you can find her." I looked up slightly and nodded.

He began pulling his head away from the room but I called out to him, "James?" He looked at me. "Wher-... whe-... who-..." I didn't know what to ask. He looked confused. I sighed, "nevermind." I could tell he wasn't quite sure what to say, so instead he told me what I needed to do when I found her. "Make sure she doesn't suspect a thing. She needs to trust you." I nodded. "You are my faithful friend and spy. Please try not to fuck this up." He looked into my eyes with a dangerous flare in his eyes. I gulped and nodded in understanding. 'Was he always like this?' I took in a deep breath. 'Is what I'm doing even right?' I collected my thoughts and left the room. 'None of that matters.' I paused. "This is my mission." I kept walking and shook off my thoughts of uncertainty and feelings of guilt. "She has an incredible power over him," I stated in a monotone voice. 'And he's not the only one.'
