Cal's POV:

Uncle Julian said he had Mare last period, so I asked him to talk me up to her and stuff. He does have this very persuasive way about him.

But if my uncle doesn't convince her, I'll just call her up, chat with her, maybe apologize, and she'll totally fall in love with me, and want to help me.

I just have to figure out how I get her number...

On my way out to the parking lot, I see Diana Farley walking to the bus line.

Perfect.

Jog up to her before she can get on the bus.

"Hey, Diana. Can I get-"

"Stop, right there. Only my friends, can call me Diana. It's Farley to you, Calore."

I roll my eyes.

"I need Mare's phone number."

"And why would I ever give out such personal information to you, Calore?

I thought for a moment. What would Diana Farley want?

*FLASHBACK* - Mare and Cal's meeting...

"So, this best friend of yours. Is she available?" Cal asked Mare.

Mare chuckled and rolled her eyes. "She's not going to be interested in you, if that's what you mean."

"No, no. Just wondering. Can't a man ask a question?"

"One, you are most definitely not a man. Two, no. It's creepy. But to answer your question, yes, she isn't technically dating anyone. Though she does have this major crush on my brother, Shade."

"Your brother?! Wow."

"Shut up! Like you know anything about love."

*FLASHBACK OVER*

"What if I say, I can get Shade Barrow a scholarship here? Then you'll be able to see him everyday." I offered.

Farley's cheeks instantly became red. I heard her gulp as she looked around nervously. She leaned in closer.

"You serious?" She whispered.

"Dead serious." I replied. I even had the gull to wink.

She sighs exasperatedly. "Fine. Fine, Calore. I'll tell you."

I smiled.

Yeah, I was not going to get that scholarship for Shade.

Mare's POV:

The car ride home was peaceful. Peaceful as it could be, at least.

When I got home, everyone bombarded me with questions. But ignored them, and went straight to my room.

*buzz*

Kilorn:
Hey Mare how was school??? 😰🤣😭

Mare:
Fine. Can you come over?

Kilorn:
Can u come here??? Got in a fight w\ Bree last week

Mare:
Sure. 🤣

On my way to Kilorn's house, I get... another call. It's unknown, and I almost don't answer, until the thoughts start to get to me.

What if it's my mom?? What if someone died? WHAT IF ITS THE LOTTERY SAYING I WON EVEN THOUGH THE LOTTERY IS IN FIVE DAYS BUT THE PEOPLE WHO WORK THERE ARE TIME TRAVELERS AND KNOW I WON EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T BUY A TICKET TO BEGIN WITH?!?!? (#relatable right girls?! *cringy laugh*)

Or what if it's Cal...

Oh well.

"Hello?"

"Mare? Is this you"

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

"Cal?"

"Yep. Hey, I need to talk."

"Good for you."

"Seriously, Mare."

"Seriously, Cal. I'm hanging up."

"MARE!! I swear to God."

"Cal, you are insane. Just like your uncle."

"Just hear me out. Maven is a nice guy-"

"I DON'T care! He could be the nicest guy on the fucking Earth. I am not here to entertain your lies, and will not bend to your every whim. Just because you decide to lie to your girlfriend, does not mean that I have to follow through with that. And if Evangeline finds out that you're a liar, then-"

"I will revoke your scholarship."

What the fuck...

"Excuse me?"

"I gave you this opportunity. I can take it away as well."

Ugh... He's playing with my emotions. I told him too much when we met. He knows how much my family means to me. If I get expelled, they'd be crushed.

"Would you seriously do that?" I asked.

"Would you seriously sacrifice your family's happiness for a little lie?"

Wow.

"Huh?" He asked again.

"No."

"Great. Then meet me at my house in 5."

"Wait, wha-"

"I'm assuming you know where it is. It's not exactly hidden."

"Cal, I-"

"See ya! Bye!" And then he hung up.

Uhhhhhhhgggg...

Maven's POV:

E, E, E, E, E, E, E, G, C, D, F - no, G - no, E! Ugh, forget it.

I take my hands off the gleaming white keys of the piano. Mother wants me to learn how to play.

After my failed attempt at Jingle Bells, I picked up my phone to Google the music notes.

When Cal walked in.

Will he ever leave me alone?

"Hey, Mavey?" He asked.

"What's up?"

He cleared his throat. "So, you know how you were kinda jealous about Evangeline and I?"

Has he lost his mind? Cause I'll help him find it! - The Office. It's one of my favorite shows. Mother says it's distasteful, but the one thing I will never, ever let her control, is my TV.

"Um, no, Cal. I don't recall ever being jealous of the biggest brat in the world, and her boyfriend."

He looked at me, confused as hell. "But you were just talking about her last night."

I raised an eyebrow. "If you couldn't tell, I was making fun of the poor Bitch, not talking her up."

Then, just then, I hear someone snort from outside the door. I know for a fact it wasn't anyone from my family. Anyone who dares to even talk about making a sound like that, Mother takes care of. Let me just say, you do not want Mother to take care of you.

She took away my books last week. Like, what am I supposed to do without my books?! Go outside? No thank you.

"Who is that?" I ask. My voice rising a little. There was even a little anger in there, which I didn't expect. But what can ya do?

Cal smirked. "Well, since I know you'll probably never have a chance with another girl..."

What the heck?!

I glared at him. Hard.

His smile faltered. "It's just a joke Mavey, chill out. Anyways..."

He smiled at someone outside the door and waved for them to come in.

"I got you a girlfriend! Meet Mare Barrow."
