Maven's POV:

A girl stepped out from behind the wall. A stunning, gorgeous, beautiful girl.

Why in Earth would she ever want to be associated with me?

She had beautiful brown hair, cascading down her back. She only had on a t-shirt and jeans, but damn, how a single person could rock such a simple look, I will never know. Her arms were crossed in a defiant manner, and a scowl played on her face. She was obviously here against her will. I wish she wasn't.

Cal walked to my desk and pulled out the chair. "Mare, you can sit down." He said.

She crossed her arms and glared at Cal. "Nah, I'm good."

Defiant. Hates Cal.

I like her already.

Cal mumbled something under his breath that I couldn't hear, then turned back to me.

"Maven, this is Mare Molly Barrow-"

"How do you know my middle name?" She interrupted.

Cal's eyes widened. "I- I just do."

"Well, it's creepy." Mare said, raising her eyebrow in his direction. Cal sighed and shook his head.

"Basically, Mare here, was generous enough to help me with a little dilemma concerning Evangeline." He said. I scoffed. Hasn't enough people been terrorized by her?

"She's now posing as Mareena. And luckily for you brother, Mareena has to be dating you." He said.

"Are you kidding me, Cal? This is insane. " I said. "Just because you screwed up, doesn't mean she should have to give her life away, to- to you."

Cal raised an eyebrow. "Maven..." he warned.

Screw his warnings.

"What is this going to solve?" I asked.

"Thank you!" Mare scoffed. She motioned in my direction. "You could just not do anything. I wouldn't talk to Evangeline. Actually, no, I don't want to talk to Evangeline. I'll just go away, and you'll never have to see me again."

Good. And then, she'll be out of my way when Maven's Fantastic Plan For Cal's Demise begins.

"What about her life?" I added.

Cal's eyebrow raised even more than I thought it could. "Life?"

And this is why he needs to be destroyed.

"You know, the thing she had before your stupid decisions. Family, friends. A life. I'm sure she would want to be with somebody else other than, well, me." To my surprise, Mare raised a shoulder.

"Eh." She mumbled. "Everyone at my school are dicks."

Cal chuckled and shook his head. "I'm sure not all of them-"

"All of them." She glared. "Name one."

Are they seriously going to do this right now? Forget dating me, they should be together.

"Well for starters, how about me-" Cal started before Mare started cackling, like a witch. And in that moment, one I will forever regret, she reminded me of my mother.

"Thanks Cal, I needed a laugh today." Mare chuckled, slapping a hand in Cal's shoulder. She is starting to get really annoying.

"I still don't understand." I interrupted Mare and Cal's staring at each other. Cal glared at me. I can tell he really likes her. I just don't know why he's using her to get back together with his girlfriend.

"She's really just a distraction for Evangeline." He said. I could see Mare roll her eyes and scoff out of the corner of my eye. "So she wouldn't suspect anything that would lead her to breaking up with me."

"Why would you want to date that bitch anyways?" I ask.

Mare finally makes eye contact with me for the first time this evening, (she has chocolate brown eyes with silver specks) and nods her head. "I like you whats-your-name."

"It's Maven." I correct and stick my hand out. I don't really know what I expected her to do, given what happened with Cal, so she just responded with:

"I don't care."

"Mavey, we've been over this." Cal sighs. Mare snorts.

"Mavey?" She asks. Her face is bright red, so and her eyes are squinty, almost like she's holding in a sneeze.

Oh, she was enjoying this. I think we were both competing to try to make Cal more annoyed. I was going to win.

I shrugged off the Mavey comment and turned to Cal. "What does she get out of this, anyways?" I asked. The look on his face made me realize I won. Mare gasped and started laughing.

"Yeah, Cal. What do I get out of this?" She asked, putting hand on her chin.  Cal rolled his eyes and stared deep into my soul. Damn.

"Well, I was going to revoke-" He began before being interrupted by Mare and I's cackling.

"No! No!" She snickered. "I want something else. Or I won't do it." Cal looked annoyed as hell, but we weren't backing down.

"How about I bring Shade to Archeon?" He asked. "I promised your friend Farley that I would."

Mare nods her head excitedly. "Yep. Okay. Deal." She spurts. I click my tongue.

Siding with the devil so easily. And I thought you were better.

"And my friend, Kilorn Warren. Him too."

"Who?" Cal asks. Mare rolls her eyes and smirks.

"Just the best person in the universe."

"Mare, I can't just bring on randoms off the street into the best school in Norta."

Mare smirked. "That's exactly what you did to me, Calore." For once he was at a loss of words.

She's magical.

"F- Fine." He stammered. Mare was smiling ear to ear.

"Good. Now if you two boys don't need anything else from me, and would please excuse me, I would just love to be on my way." She turned around and was just as shocked as was, when she saw the woman before her. Standing there, dripping in jewels and finery, was:

My mother.
