Chapter 18

When we had got home from the beach Zainab went home but Zack stayed to speak to dad. The study door was closed for ages and i lingered around the stairs trying to listen in.
'Whats going on?' Luke came out of the kitchen, i ran and put my hand over his mouth
'Shhhh get over here' i wheeled him towards the dining room where Lizetta was sat on her laptop, pushing him into the room, i closed the door.
'What on earth' he exclaimed
'It means they're getting married' Lizetta spoke without looking up from her laptop so i walked around to see what she was doing and it shocked me when i saw she was looking at wedding venues.
'Liz, how..?' I began but didnt get a chance to finish because dad walked in and hugged me
'Im so happy for you beta' he was smiling from ear to ear and it made me tear up seeing him this happy. Lizetta also got teary eyed as she watched us but Luke just looked annoyed.
I tried to look past dad to see Zack but he must have left already.
'We must hurry with the preperations since there are only a few weeks so tommorow go with Lizetta and look for your dress hmm' dad looked lost in thought but i just nodded. This was all happening so fast i didnt even know when I'd agreed to get married i just remembered swimming in his eyes and his warm embrace. Thinking about him made my cheeks burn so i excused myself pretending i was tired i went upstairs and changed into some comfy navy joggers and matching sweatshirt. I had work tommorow so i busied myself in ironing my clothes and preparing my workbag. I was about to go down for dinner when my phone pinged
[Miss you already, meet me tommorow after work?]
I knew i couldn't since i had a seminar to attend until late. I replied apologising and explaining i couldn't then ran downstairs when i heard Luke calling about dinner being ready. Although Lizetta was not asian she could cook the best pakistani food ever. Hot steaming biryani sat before me but not for long as i raced with Luke to finish so we could go out for ice cream. I was so full though i suggested we go the next day and we spent the evening playing playstation games and betting on things like chores. Luke kept showing off his ability to walk now and he was getting quite stable, most of his injuries had fully healed.

The next morning i raced off to work, late as usual. It was hot out and i wore a white shirt and grey chinos. My hair was in my classic bun style on top of my head and i had decided on heels today so i could look older at the seminar as people often mistook me for being younger due to my child like face. The day went quickly i had so much work i barely had time for lunch but at 5pm i stood outside the seminar room looking at the refreshment cart with a glorious selection of cakes and rejoiced, even if this was going to be three hours of boredom atleast there was plenty to munch on. After the seminar finished i walked to my car slowly as my legs were stiff from sitting. I got a text from Luke saying i owed him ice cream so i stopped at a dessert shop on the way home. There was long que at the counter and i sighed my feet ached from the heels but i had no choice so i waited. A barrister with a tray of drinks went past me but he looked like the tray was too heavy for him, sure enough his hand buckled under the weight and the tray slipped, a tall glass of iced tea fell directly on me soaking me through. The worst thing i was wearing a white shirt that now became see through, i panicked grabbing a napkin i tried to cover myself while i wiped it and was just about to run out of there when a brown leather jacket suddenly enveloped me. I recognised the earthy woody scent before i saw the face, it was Zack.

I just stared up at him as he put the jacket on me and manoeuvred me out of the shop. His hand lingered on my lower back sending tingles up my spine.
'What are you doing here?' He asked me once we got to his car. I took the handkerchief from his extended hand and dabbed myself until my shirt was no longer wet.
'I came to get ice cream for Luke' he processed and looked as if he was about to say something but changed his mind
'Get in I'll take you home'
'Its alright i bought my car'
'It'll be parked up outside your house tommorow morning dont worry now get in' for some reason he sounded annoyed so i just did as he said.
The car journey was silent for a while, when he spoke he didnt look at me but straight ahead at the road
'How long is Luke staying at your house?' He tried to sound uninterested but his every word was laced with curiosity
'Hes able to walk about now so not much longer' i wanted to laugh at his jealousy but i held it in. He just nodded but immediately cheered up.
'Are you free an evening this week theres somewhere i want to take you' he said as he parked up outside my house
'Thursday, where are we going?' i said knowing i was finishing early that day anyway so I'd have time to get ready
'I'll pick you up at seven and its a surprise' and then he did the most impossibly amazing thing..he winked at me and i totally lost it like a teenage school girl. I actually tried to get out of the car without undoing the seatbelt, he watched me confused then moved forward to undo it, our faces were an inch apart and his scent was driving me insane i naturally curved my body closer not wanting to leave when i heard a voice from behind me.
'Wheres the ice cream?' Luke stood in the driveway arms folded across his chest looking like he was ready to go at it with someone. I immediately sprung out of the car and linked arms with him
'I got soaked' i said pointing down at myself hoping it would explain why i was wearing Zacks jacket. Zack looked like he was about to get out of the car i couldnt let these two face off so i pushed Luke to get him walking towards the front door and waved back at Zack.
'I'll return the jacket tommorow thanks' turning to face Luke 'Lucky for me he happened to be there' i said as i opened the front door and dragged him inside.
