When Kreacher heard about Dobby's death, he was devastated. it was the first time since his master Regulus' death that he had felt sadness, He asked a very surprised Harry where Dobby was buried. The next day he went to Shell Cottage with two socks one pitch black, the word "Kreacher" written on it in white. the other white as snow, the black letters forming the word "Dobby"
When Harry later, went to visit Dobby's grave he saw the socks and decided to add another one, with a flick of his wand he conjured a red one with gold lettering that read "Harry" with this, laying socks on Dobby's grave instead of flowers, became a sort of tradition.
