An Angel Straight from Hell

Chapter 9

That was close.

Sam read Chloe's message in furious disbelief. He had taken for granted that he would not hear from her ever again.  If she was expecting an answer to that message, she wouldn't get one.

You were not supposed to know.

Of course he wasn't. Sam could not remember the last time he had felt this irritated. He decided to go for a hike. It was late but there was nothing like a long walk to cool off. Just as he was about to leave the room, his phone began to buzz against the table. She was calling. He decided that speaking his mind couldn't hurt, so he picked up.

"What exactly do you want, Chloe?"

"I want replies to my messages. That's what I want."

"Cheaters don't get replies from Sam Kiszka."

"You don't count as cheating. You are Sam fucking Kiszka, man. You said it."

"Well, why didn't you just tell Troy the truth today, uh?"

There was a long pause before Chloe answered. "Okay. You're right. But I warned you. I'm only human, Sam."

"I thought you meant you get horny like everybody else, for Christ's sake."

Chloe just laughed.

"What are you laughing about?" Sam asked outraged.

"It's just... horny and Christ in the same sentence... I mean, sorry. Well, I guess your instincts failed you this time. What I meant is that I make mistakes like everyone else."

"How was I supposed to know what you meant?"

"Asking. You didn't ask, Sam. You just understood whatever you wanted to understand."

Sam stayed silent while mulling over Chloe's words. What if she had been hinting the truth and he had not wanted to see it?

Chloe spoke again. "Also, you gave me your number if i remember correctly."

"But you called! The only difference is I didn't know you had a boyfriend and you did." He took in a deep breath before going on. His hesitation had now changed into pure rage. "Listen. Don't even try to turn this on me. This was all you. How could you do this? Troy seems like a nice guy!"

"Oh, you want his number too?" Chloe spluttered. "Troy seems like a nice guy. Listen to yourself. You saw him once and for like five seconds."

"Why do you care so little about the person you chose as your boyfriend?"

"The real question is why do you care so much? You are leaving the city anyways."

Chloe's attitude had caused Sam's rage to dissipate. He was disappointed and dispirited but not angry. "That does not make it less cheating."

"No, but at least he won't get a chance to beat your ass if he finds out."

"I'm not scared, just sorry."

"Relax. It's not like this was some sort of love story or anything, Sam."

He felt a surge of anger but decided that it was time to get down from that emotional roller coaster so he just hung up.
