"Can we just stay here and watch movies?" I ask, feeling apprehensive. The quietness of the room wraps around us, and I can't help but feel comforted in the moment. The sun is shining through the window, casting a warm glow over the room, and the soft sound of birds chirping can be heard in the distance.
Lena smiles and responds, "Of course." As I jump into her arms, she stumbles back a few paces trying to catch me without falling over herself. She pecks my cheek, her beaming smile contagious. Her eyes sparkle with joy, and I can feel the happiness radiating from her. Her warmth is inviting as she takes my hand and leads me into my living room. The room is cozy, with a plush couch, a soft rug, and an array of colorful throw pillows.
Lena lets go of my hand, and I fall onto the couch. She soon grabs the remote for the TV and snuggles into my side. The softness of her hair against my cheek is comforting, and I can feel her breaths as they match my own. I wrap my arm around her and pull her closer, feeling the softness of her skin against mine. I'm having a total meltdown, heart attack, and panic attack all at once. She rests her head on my chest. The sound of her breathing is soothing, and I can feel myself relaxing into it. She can probably hear how my heart is beating insanely fast.
I push myself up to peck her on the lips before running off to the kitchen. "We can't watch a movie without popcorn."
Lena looks at me, confused, "Kara, it's only 10am. Why are you eating popcorn this early?"
I pop my head out of the kitchen door, pouting, "I'm hungry."
"We literally just had pancakes," Lena smiles softly at me and my heart melts. I disappear back into the kitchen.
"Do you want anything to drink?"
"Do you have any wine?"
"Lena," I sigh, glancing back over to where she's sat, lounging on the couch. "It's too early to be drinking alcohol."
"Just like it's too early to be eating popco- oh god."
"What? What is it?" I ask, worry coaxing my voice. Panic settles over me at the sudden look of horror dawned over her face.
"Are you even of age to be drinking?" I can tell Lena's starting to panic too, worrying that I'm not allowed to be drinking and by her asking a student for wine when they're 'underage' probably isn't the brightest idea.
"Yes," I giggle, causing Lena to visibly relax as she lets out the breath she was holding. "I'm eighteen. What about you, are you of age?" I tease her.
"Haha, very funny." She playfully rolls her eyes at me, crossing one leg over the other as my eyes draw across the movement.
"How old are you?" My question comes out of the blue, surprising even myself. Lena frowns at me, probably wondering why I'm asking. "I- I was wondering if you're of age to be drinking at 10am." I manage to blurt out, chewing on my lower lip as nerves start to creep to the surface.
"Kara, you know I was joking, right? I don't want you to think I'm some alcoholic, because I'm not. I was only-"
"Lena I know," I cut her off, laughing slightly to shake off the weird feeling crawling like bugs over my skin, "I was playing along."
"Not that age matters or anything, but seriously, how old are you? If you don't mind me asking, that is. You look way younger than any of the other teachers and I'm just curious."
"You do flatter me." Lena laughs. "I'm the same age as your sister."
"So... twenty?" Lena nods, still perched on the couch as I take a position leaning against the kitchen doorframe. "How're you a teacher?
