When I began planning for my third and final Wattpad story, I once again opted to a sort of romance in which the characters began as friends and eventually fell in love. My main reason for doing this was because that's exactly how Ross and Laura would end up getting together in real life, as long time friends becoming a couple.
I also wanted to include some sort of nostalgia, partly because I knew it would be my last story, and also because as time goes on, the end of A&A becomes more and more a thing of the past, which means the cast (especially Ross and Laura) don't see each other as often anymore.
I chose the title, "Like a Tattoo", for its literal and figurative meaning. With the simile obviously referring to Raura's friendship, which will always be permanent between them both in real life and in my fanfic, but also the literal significance of a permanent tattoo on someone's body. By combining the two, I hoped to convey the message that a friendship like what Ross and Laura have in real life is permanent. Whether 2023 or not, it's the commonalities and past experiences which they've shared together that will keep a strong bond between them.
To me, Ross and Laura should obviously be dating, but ultimately, what I wanted to get through to readers was that above all, they would always remain friends because of the relationship they formed on and off the set Austin & Ally. Though their careers are currently worlds apart, undoubtedly they're still close.
A lot of Rourtney or Raz shippers have made fun of Raura shippers on Twitter and Instagram, saying that our ship is "dead". While it's true that Ross and Laura aren't dating, what those other shippers do not realize is that Raura is more than a ship name; it's a name for Ross and Laura's friendship. So to correct you non-Raura supporters, the Raura ship is and always will be alive.
I wrote this fanfic out of an abundance of nostalgia, obviously, but also because I was ending high school soon, and I knew I wouldn't have the chance to see my friends every day anymore. I would likely be moving over a hundred miles away from home, and so would they. We're currently scattered across the US at different colleges, which has been difficult to cope with. However, by writing this fanfic, I understood more of what it meant to have a lasting friendship, despite the physical distance separating us.
Thank you, readers, for giving me such support as I wrote new chapters for you, creating a romance between Ross and Laura, but also helping me understand what I was going through.
I hope you've enjoyed Like a Tattoo, and while I won't be very active on Wattpad anymore, my PM's are always open.
Thanks for reading.
