Zoe
The carnival was located on a large field and this year was already a success for our tent. In an hour alone we had already made a thousand dollars and the boys were busy cooking with Hunter's mom while I ran the register. I enjoyed putting my men to work in a way where it would help other people who didn't have much. I never kept a cent of the money we made off of the fundraiser. It was meant for charity and charity only.
Hunter was two hours late and it ticked me off. Last night he spent with Lola and never came home so I assumed he stayed with her. But I gave him a specific time to be here and he didn't even have the respect to make it. I knew he wasn't ready to listen to his mothers rant about why he'd been gone for so long and never even told her he was back, but this was an event for charity. It'd mean a lot if he came and participated.
"Is that my son?" Mandy roared and right on cue I saw Hunter walking alone towards the tent.
Mandy threw the rag she was carrying down on the table and marched straight to him, grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, pulled him down to her short body and said something that made him look like he shit his pants. I cheered her on in my head as she continued to say something and Hunter nodded. His lips said sorry to her and she patted his cheek then returned to the food.
"Wasn't as bad as I thought," he smiled when he finally reached me and I placed my hands on my hips.
"You're late."
"Oh great am I going to be yelled at by you too?"
"No," I smiled and crossed my arms. "Just going to ignore you."
For a mere second I forgot Hunter and I were no longer an item and me ignoring him wasn't going to effect him in any way. So I was slightly embarrassed for my choice of words.
"Fine by me," he snarled and headed to the back.
I sighed and handled the line of customers I had waiting. Noticing now that Hunter wasn't available and I had no one made a feeling of loneliness lurk it's way into my brain. He and I had a lot of fun together but now those days had to come to an end. He seemed happy with Lola. The entire week they'd been hanging out. Now that I knew he spent the night there I frowned and thought maybe this wasn't a good idea to hook him up with someone else. Maybe I did still have feelings for him. I thought if he was with someone that I wouldn't have feelings anymore but I was wrong.
Tyler's words appeared in my head, how everyone wanted us back together. It would have taken time for anything to even happen between him and I again. But I could have just waited and given him a chance to prove himself to me. We could have been together and things would go back to how they were. I could have someone with me on Valentine's Day instead of spending it alone in my room binge watching Dexter. On Christmas I could wake up with someone and drink cocoa while opening presents instead of sleeping the whole day ignoring my friends who wanted to be with me. I could have had someone to love again.
Tyler and I took a walk when the sun started to set and the carnival ride lights brightened the field. I walked slowly next to him, counting my steps as I watched my shoes.
"What's wrong with you?" Tyler asked me. "You never show your emotions. Right now you look like you ran over a puppy."
"It's nothing," I sighed.
Tyler stopped me dead in my tracks when he halted in front of me and took my arms in his hands. He tore his eyes into mine.
"You're worrying me, seriously. I mean you've really hid your emotions all these years pretty good. Now your sulking for once and you want to give me the 'it's nothing' crap?"
