quick warning: mentions of not being able to conceive children

"A crayon up his nose?" Jackson exclaimed quietly, earning another laugh from Monica.

Currently, Monica was telling Jackson about her classroom tales. All the things she had seen in her three years of being a kindergarten teacher. At first, Jackson was a bit concerned for Carlie's safety at the school but as Monica went on he realized how great she handled situations.

"So, you don't have any kids? You seem like you'd be a great mother." Jackson sat back in his chair, watching as the lights from the almost empty diner reflected onto Monica's face.

Monica's bright, vibrant smile faded. She didn't really want to ruin the mood with her truth. Jackson watched as her gaze descended to the booth table. He sensed he had said something wrong.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Did you- you know.." Jackson gulped. Internally smaking himself at his attempt at consoling her.

"Oh. No, no." Monica smiled small, shaking her head.

"I just can't have kids." She shrugged. Drinking from her cup. With a hum for a response, Jackson nodded.

"Ever thought about adoption?" He inquired.

"Yea but I don't think I'm ready to take care of a kid yet. I know as a kindergarten teacher it looks like I know my ways but honestly I wouldn't know how to take care of another human full time. Kudos to you." Monica grinned.

"Thank you. And I know what it's like. Just don't rush into anything." Jackson said. Monica nodded and thanked him for his advice.

They waved their waiter over so they could get their check.

"Do you believe in men paying for the first date?" Jackson quirked an eyebrow.

Monica smirked before straightening up in her seat. "First date?"

Jackson widened his eyes and showcased a pursed lip smile. Becoming a bit bashful.

"I'm just playing with you," The brown skin girl giggled and pulled out her purse.

"I believe in splitting the bill for all dates. How about you?" Monica began to pull out her wallet as well but Jackson stopped her with his hand.

"Well, I guess but I invited you out. Don't you think I should pay?" Jackson brought out his own wallet.

Monica scoffed, "And I agreed. So, how about I just pay?"

This playful argument went on for a while. Each of them one uping each other in who deserved to pay the bill more. They finally reached a middle ground in which Monica was going to pay for this date's bill and Jackson would pay for the next.

Side by side they walked down the sidewalk. Passing tens of bright shops. Each of them exuding their own energy. But the only energy that needed to be focused on was the one Jackson and Monica were creating.

Their loud laughter and conversation lit up the sidewalk. The amount of people that gave them looks made them laugh even harder.

Monica hadn't been this happy in a while. Who knew Jackson could make her smile so hard that her cheeks hurt.

"I wish this night could go on longer but I kind of have work tomorrow." Jackson pouted. The two of them arriving at their parked cars.

"Me too but there's always next time." Monica grinned, walking to her car door.

"Yea, yea. There is always next time." Jackson nodded. Walking to his own car door.

They both bid their farewells and drove off onto their separate paths.
