Chapter 14 - Ice

I wasn't sure what to do. Subaru was on the ground with a hand on his side and Hoseki stood over him with a sword, now covered in red. I wasn't sure who to address first.

Subaru finally stood and his eyes lite up. "You should not have done that." He said.

"You'd better take care of that wound or you'll bleed to death." Hoseki replied. Subaru growled in irritation and I touched his shoulders.

"Subaru. Are you okay?" I asked softly.

"Been better." He replied. "I need blood." He said softly. I shifted to stand in front of him and offered my neck.

He kissed my neck gently as if it were an apology, then sank his fangs into my neck. This was nothing like the gentle bite he had given me before. My body tightened, but I didn't cry out. He drank until I was light headed.

He was the only reason I stayed on my feet after he finished. "Thanks, Aisu." He said softly, then gave me a kiss on the cheek. I nodded slightly, trying not to let myself get to dizzy. Hoseki looked pissed off.

"Hands off." He warned.

"Hands off? Why? She belongs to me, even my brothers have recognized that." Subaru replied calmly.

"She does not belong to you." Hoseki was about to swing again with his sword when the door burst open. Moeru looked frantic and, with the lighter in her hands, dangerous.

"What did you do?" Moeru hissed at Hoseki. "I don't appreciate it when you hurt Aisu. I recall warning you about that." She said.

"I have not laid a hand on her. If you want the one who put her so close to passing out, the criminal is the one holding onto to her so callously." Hoseki replied.

Moeru looked at us and then turned back to Hoseki. "I trust Subaru a lot more than I trust you." She announced and Hoseki looked even more annoyed. Then Ayato and the others entered the room.

"Look, I have no quarrel with the Sakamaki's. I only want Aisu." He said.

"At the moment Aisu is a guest of this house and we don't not take kindly to people stealing our snacks." Reiji said as he pushed up his glasses. Moeru elbowed him.

"Aisu and I aren't snacks." She scolded. He rolled his eyes, but otherwise didn't reply.

"And I think you do have a quarrel with us. You killed our grandfather." Ayato added.

"As the Gosuto's hired me to." Hoseki replied.

"Gosuto? Aisu's family?" Laito questioned.

"Yes, to get out of an old deal." He replied.

"The Brides." Kanato said, as he hid behind Teddy.

"Exactly." Hoseki confirmed.

"That explains the instant attraction." Reiji said critically.

"Well, that deal ended and now Aisu belongs to me. So I'll be taking my payment." Hoseki held out a hand to me and I pulled away, closer to Subaru who knocked his hand away.

"The Bride's are an agreement formed through blood. No deal a human could make could counter that." Subaru said.

"I'm not human. I'm a Hunter." Hoseki replied, then threw something at his feet. Black smoke started pouring out and when it reached Subaru he hissed in pain and jumped back, taking me with him.

"What's a Hunter?" I asked.

"A vampire killer who does not age. They have an type of immortality like vampires: we can't age and we can't get sick or easily hurt, but we can get killed." Reiji explained.

"That's right. And Hunter's came about to challenge the reign of vampires." Hoseki explained as he walked out of the smoke. "We wiped out most of the race, but then families started making deals. Families like the Sakamaki's." He added with disgust.

"But there aren't many Hunters left either." I commented.

"Inward strife. Also, just like vampires, we cannot have children with just anyone. Only special people like you and Moeru can." He added. I let out a breath.

"So let me get this straight... countless people died, countless women suffered, Aisu and I being forced to hide all out lived, was all because the two of us can have kids with immortals?!" Moeru shrieked.

"More or less?" Hoseki offered carefully. Moeru clicked the lighter on and aimed it right at him.
