AN: There is a little swearing (nothing serious though) in the chapter, just a heads up.
CHAPTER 9 - Fire
"This is a surprise." She said sweetly as I backed away.
"Ya, not really." I said. She laughed.
"Oh, Moeru, I love your sense of humor. It is surprising to find you here, though." She said, looking around.
"I could say the same. Aren't you miss perfect?" I asked haughtily.
She laughing again. "I'm here with permission, unlike you." She said.
"Moeru!" Ayato jumped off the banister to land just behind me and I froze to the spot, debating who to run away from. "Oh, hello. Who are you?" Ayato asked her, having not noticed her at first.
"I'm Takagi, Rima from the Church." She said.
"And you know Moeru?" Ayato looked between us with his eyes narrowed slightly.
"I do. She's a runaway orphan." Rima said brightly.
"Shut up!" I shouted at her. She looked at Ayato's shocked expression and the realization dawned on her.
"Oh, you hadn't told them." She said slyly.
"Told us what?" Laito asked from the stairs.
"Who she is. Speaking of which, is Aisu here?" She asked. I glared at her, not saying a word. Ayato opened his mouth and I glared at him. He closed his mouth slowly in surprise. "I'll take that as a yes. Where is the little ghost girl? Has she died for real?" Rima asked.
"Shut up! What the hell do you know!?" I shouted at her.
"More than you think. Anyway, I'm not here for you or Aisu." She said. "I'm here to talk to Reiji-san."
"He's busy." Ayato approached her and I slowly started to back away when he passed me. They kept talking and I went to run, only to feel a hand grab my arm. "And where do you think you're going?" Ayato asked me.
"Let go." I said sweetly. He just raised his eyebrows. "Get him to let go, you stupid ring." I thought. He suddenly let go with a hiss and I ran away quickly.
"Now, where are you Aisu?" I thought as I ran. I glanced out a window and slammed to a stop when I saw Aisu outside with Subaru and Kanato. There was a flash of lightning and then Aisu suddenly collapsed.
"Aisu!" I shouted, despite knowing she couldn't hear me. Thankfully Subaru caught her and picked her up in one motion. I ran down the stairs to meet them hopefully in the door. I timed it right, thankfully. As I ran I counted each second that went by.
"Aisu." I ran up to her and put my hand on her cheeks: she was very cold. I took her hand and checked her pulse, only to find none.
"Moeru, what happened?" Subaru asked.
"She iced. Is there a bed or couch nearby?" I asked. Kanato pointed to one just behind me and Subaru gently laid Aisu down. I kept my fingers on her wrists as I continued to count, but still there was no heartbeat.
"What does iced mean?" Kanato asked after a moment.
"It means Aisu's heart has stopped beating." I said simply.
"You mean she's dead?" Subaru asked shocked.
"Technically no. Her soul is gone and her body is technically dead, but she can come back to life without damage to her brain or body." I said.
"So why don't you say she's dead?" Kanato asked.
"Because she's not." I answered simply. "She's not dead, she's iced. And I'm the fire that melts that ice." I added to myself.
"Moeru." I jumped when Reiji spoke from behind me.
"Yes?" I asked without looking away from Aisu's face.
"I heard quite an interesting tale from Rima-san about you and Aisu. How much of it is true?" Reiji asked.
"Depends who you ask. Coming from me I'd say probably only a little, but according to the church it's probably all true. Depends on what she told you." I said. "Aisu, wake up. It's been over two minutes already." I begged silently.
"The two of you are orphans." Reiji said.
"True." I answered.
"You met at the church as roommates."
"True."
"You burned down the building?"
"Technically that wasn't my fault." I corrected. "I had it under control. They lite the curtain on fire." I added.
"And during the fire Aisu got hurt trying to help you?"
"I got some injuries of my own helping her." I muttered.
"And then the two of you ran away." Reiji said.
"Sounds about right." I said. "Though a couple important details were missing." I added to myself.
"What important details?" Kanato asked with his eyes wide.
"Rima didn't tell you about the hell they put Aisu through because she could see things we couldn't. She didn't mention the beatings I got for being a pyro. She didn't mention the time she tried to kill Aisu, though she'll swear it was an accident." I spat angrily.
"Yes, those are important details." Reiji said slowly, like he was thinking over carefully what I had told him. "Excuse me, I need to discuss something with Rima-san." He turned and left.
"So those scars on your back are from the beatings, aren't they?" Ayato asked.
"Yes." I admitted. "But Aisu went through worse." I said.
"She doesn't have any physical scars." Laito said. I glared at him, since I didn't know how long he'd been here.
"No, her's are mental." I tightened my grip ever so slightly on her wrist when I remembered what it was like at first. "Which is almost worse." I muttered to myself.
