Chapter 15 - Fire
I stood there for a moment, the lighter shaking slightly as I debated what to do with Hoseki. I wanted to burn him: he deserved to be roasted. When Aisu moved I looked at her. "Aisu, are you okay?" I asked.
She nodded slightly and set a hand on my arm, gently making me lower the lighter. "Hoseki, I appreciate everything you've done, but this is to far." She said.
"To far?" He questioned.
"Enough blood has been shed on my account." Aisu said.
"Hey, our account. It's not your burden alone." I objected quickly. Aisu gave me a sad smile.
"No, my account. It was my ancestors actions that caused this whole mess so I'll take responsibility for it." Aisu said.
"Take responsibility how? You wouldn't do something stupid like try to kill yourself." I questioned and she shook her head.
"What good would that accomplish? No, I know just what to do." Aisu said. "You better not kill each other." She warned Hoseki and the vampires before she left.
We all stood there just looking at each other for a moment. I was the first to run after her. "Aisu, hold up. What are you going to do?" I asked, but she either didn't hear or didn't want to answer. She was walking fast, with a determination I had never seen. It startled me.
She didn't stop until she reached the front entryway and then let out a breath. She closed her eyes and I glanced around the room again. "What's so special about this spot... Oh." I had just formed the thought when I realized the answer.
"Aisu, don't!" I ran to her but just as I touched her shoulder her body went limp. I caught her, but the weight knocked me to the ground. I sat there for a moment with her head in my lap before my fingers hesitantly reached for her cheeks.
Her skin was always cold, but it was growing colder by the second. My fingers went to her neck and for a moment I was shaking to hard to even touch her. Then I managed to feel for a pulse. There wasn't one. I swallowed the growing knot in my throat and started counting.
For a long time nothing changed. I barely noticed the others as they left, occasionally coming back to check on us. I didn't know who or how long they stayed and I didn't care. The only thing I cared about was feeling Aisu's heartbeat.
I reached 28,952 before someone tapped my shoulder then knelt next to me. "Moeru, staying here any longer won't do you or her any good." Subaru said.
I nodded slightly. He was right: she had never stayed iced for a whole hour before, let alone eight. "She's not dead." I said out loud.
"I know." He helped me stand and placed a pillow under Aisu's head. "Go rest. I'll take care of her." He said, giving me a push towards the stairs.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I questioned as I took small steps towards my room.
"I have my reasons. Go, unless you want me to be mean." He wasn't joking or flirting with me when he said it, it was merely a question. I glanced at Aisu then at him.
"It's better not to move her. Makes it easier for her to find her way back." I informed him and he nodded. I hesitated, my brain working in overdrive to come up with anything so I could stay longer, but it wasn't until I turned to go that I remembered something.
I turned on my heel, swiftly walked back, and knelt next to Aisu. I pulled out my oldest match case, one that Aisu had given me, and took out the only match left in the box. "Aisu, you have to wake up, okay? I don't care if it's now or in the future, but you have to wake up." I ordered softly.
I gently took her hands and laid them on her stomach, the match laying underneath them both. I kissed her cheek and then stood. "Subaru, I know you'll love a longer life than me so I want you to swear something to me right now." I said.
"And what is that?" He asked.
"Protect her." I said.
"She'll wake up before that happens." He replied.
I smiled and then laughed. "Ya. She'll wake up and when she does the first words out of her mouth will be 'what were you so worried for?'."
"Go rest." He ordered and I listened this time. I didn't look back at Aisu because I got the feeling that it wasn't the right time. The next time I looked at her would be when she woke up.
