So they prepared. Iris sharpened one of her daggers while Sokka put on his black suit and left his hair loose for the sake of looking like the guy he was supposed to impersonate.
Sokka looked at her as she fitted another dagger in her boot. The mask the Mother of Faces had given her, Iris wore it at all times. Elin's face, above her own. He was somehow so sure that she'd never let him see how bad was the flesh beneath.
After the explosion half her face had been badly cauterized. But she never even talked about it. They didn't talk much. They've been two days that it took them watching the family nearby. Their moves, their outings. Making sure their daughter was in that particular room at the back.
"Ready," Iris asked as she turned and looked at him snapping him out of his thoughts.
He sighed deeply "Yeah,"
He couldn't believe that he'd ever come to helping kill a little baby girl. He hated this. He hated it so much, but Iris seemed like she was gonna do something... normal. Like it was not such a big deal.
"You've done this before... haven't you?" Sokka asked.
Iris stood silent for a moment as she grabbed a cloth and wrapped it around her neck. She was gonna use it to hide her face afterwards.
"Let's go, Egorid," She said, using the name of the man he was supposed to act he was.
Sokka sighed and covered half his face as well and followed her as they exited the cabin of their ship and they walked back on shore, all the way to the small house of the family.
They hid behind the woods, just behind the house. The window was open and the child was sleeping there, peacefully. They both sneaked in the house through the window.
Sokka walked towards the door of the little girl's room and half opened it, making sure the parents on the other side were sleeping.
Iris grabbed a pillow... and by the time Sokka turned his head she whispered "Let's go,"
That fast?! Sokka thought. But he didn't say anything more and just followed her out of the room from the window and they ran back in the woods.
Sokka jerked off the cloth around his face and stopped her grabbing her shoulder "That fast?!" He asked.
"Doesn't take much to suffocate a baby," Iris said "Lets head back to the ship,"
And they did. And Sokka wanted to ask many, many questions but she didn't let him. She just locked herself in her cabin and he just found himself waiting outside, listening to her sobbing, and crying.
He only wished she'd open up to him and let him help, talk, come closer somehow. That was hard for her. He knew. Iris had never been more distant. Nobody had seen that part of herself. The kinda part that just... kills as if it is a normal thing to spend your time with.
But now he knew. She was just playing tough. She was being very good at doing that. Very good at hiding. But not from him.
Sokka sighed. He wasn't gonna barge in and force her to accept his consoling. He wasn't gonna force her at all. In anything. He was gonna go slow. She just needed time.
Attending your own funeral wasn't something that was just gonna be forgotten easily.
Next morning they found another leathered file with the second quest. The second mission. It was all about sneaking in a silver mine... and killing every single worker, so that the Red Shadow Demons could use it to make their own weapons.
This is gonna be fun.
