Poem: Dead Smile

I want to be accepted,
Body and mind.
I want to feel loved
And love someone who's mine
Without fear, anxiety,
Hate and silent crying.
I know I ask too much
When I ask for you,
Your time, your gaze, your touch
And you in all your truth.
I catch myself as I begin to fall
For your smile and sad eyes
As you rant, your eyes wild,
Looking at me and talking to the sky,
Watching her as she walks by,
Too soon you're ready to leave
And you say goodbye.
It's only ever sad for me
As you get up and pat my back,
Smiling at me distractedly
By which time you're already gone.
Is it my face, my voice, my smile...?
It must be the sadness in me,
Betraying my dead smile.
Are your eyes even looking at me?
When all of them leave
At the end of the long day
And I'm left to my thoughts
I realise no one ever cared, anyway.
