Marcy checked the time. "It's bedtime."
"Can I see?" Sam asked.
"The only one I really oversee bathing is Z. Everyone else knows how to wash up."
"They don't need help taking baths?"
"Nope. Neph is five. As long as someone runs the bath for her, she won't drown. Tris is older and so is Ais. They're all old enough."
"Wow."
"Come on." She stood up and led him up to the third floor, where the children and nannies were. She went to knock on doors and let the kids know to take their baths and get ready for bed, even if the older kids didn't go yet.
She went to Zasha's room and saw the little girl was playing with her Barbies. "Hi, Mommy!"
"Hi, baby!" Marcy went to scoop her up.
Zasha laughed gaily.
Marcy made noises as she kissed her cheek.
Sam was sunk...
Marcy set Zasha on her feet. "Okay. Time for bath."
"Bathtime!" The little girl danced. She and her siblings had inherited their mother's utter adoration for water.
"Go pick out your jammies."
Zasha went to her closet and chose a pink nightgown and panties from the dresser. She came back happily.
Marcy took her hand. "You stay here. I'll be right back."
Sam nodded as she left, Zasha staring at him the whole time. He looked around the room when the door closed.
The room was fit for a princess. It was large and had soft light pearl pink carpet with bubblegum pink walls, a large princess bed, a sitting area and so many toys that Sam was sure they'd bought out Toys'R'Us before they closed.
But the room was clean. Except for the dolls that the three year old had been playing with, everything was in its place.
He went to the desk pushed up by a nightstand by the bed and saw a puzzle that must have been homework for the preschooler.
Every answer was correct.
Sam was surprised. He knew he wouldn't have gotten nearly as many right at that age. Z must be really smart.
On the coffee table in the seating area was a tea set. He went to sit in a chair and inspected it. It was not plastic like his little sister's had been at that age. This was real china.
Was his dad right and they were old money? Of course they were. Her family were entertainers. They had to have had money.
What had he gotten into? His parents were middle class when they saved up enough. The house alone seemed like a real life castle. Those were two very different distinctions.
Marcy came back in with Zasha on her hip. She set the little girl down and went to put her clothes in the hamper in the closet before coming back. "Get your book."
Zasha went to her bookcases and chose a thick book before climbing in bed.
Marcy sat next to her and curled up. "Sam?"
"Yeah?" Sam watched her get comfortable.
"Come sit. There's a settee at the end of the bed."
That's what that weird pink couch is? Sam moved to the fuchsia settee.
Marcy opened the book. "Which one?"
Zasha flipped through the pages and found the story of Snow White and Ruby Rose. Then she shocked Sam further when she began reading!
