Chapter Sixteen: Lost

Geonhak POV

They walk through the unchanged desert landscape for several days. "You said there would be more plants on our way but I see none.", Hwanwoong cries out. “There should be some.“, Ravn states. “Are we maybe lost?“, Dongju asks. “I smell burnt wood somewhere nearby.“, Geonhak says. “There might be someone who can show us in which direction we need to go. Lead us there.“, Ravn says. Geonhak follows the smell and leads the others to an old campfire. “This looks familiar.“, Keonhee states. “Oh, Hwanwoong. I found your ring.“, Seoho exclaims. “It's our campfire.“, Ravn says frustrated. Dongju falls to his knees and looks like he is about to cry. “We will never get to the village then. We only have enough food for two more days.“, he says. “I have a feeling that we should go in this direction.“, Seoho recommends. Seoho points into a direction that looks like all the other directions.“I am not sure where we are right now and where to go, so let's go with your gut feeling.“, Ravn says. They walk into the direction Seoho pointed at for a few hours. “I don't think there is something in this direction.“, Keonhee says. “Just be patient. There will be something.“, Seoho tries to calm the younger man down. “If this was the right direction, shouldn't there be more plants?“, Hwanwoong questions the angels decision. “You are really desperate for plants.“, Geonhak says in a mocking tone. “Are you not sick of all this sand? I would really like to see a forest or some mountains or just anything that isn't sand again.“ “Guys, I think over there is something!“, Ravn shouts exited. In the distance Geonhak can see outlines of something that looks like a farm. A farm in the desert? It seems a little bit familiar to him. “Plants!“, Hwanwoong screams and jumps up and down in excitement. “Ahh my ears, Hwanwoong.“, Dongju spits at the half elf and puts his hands over his ears. “See, I told you this was a good direction.“, Seoho says proudly.
“But how is it possible to have a small farm in the middle of the desert without water?“, Keonhee wonders. After thinking about it for a few seconds Geonhak seems to have found the answer: “A wizard. Ravns house has also no water source nearby but they still have a really big garden outside that they water with a water spell.“
They walk through garden, next to them flies a basket and the carrots automaticly jump into it when it flies over them. “Definitly the home of a wizard.“, Keonhee states and gets a little bit scared when the basket flies over his head. Geonhak knocks on the door. It opens shortly afterwards. But no one seems to be home. The house is a lot smaller than Ravns. The living room seems to be the study room and laboratory at the same time. A lot of books lie around everywhere. The bookshelves are full of antique literature and a smaller shelf with odd ingredients hangs above the alchemy table which is as messy as the rest of the room. There a two doors. One leads to a small kitchen. Some dishes wash themselves in a water bucket. The other room is a bed room. It is pretty empty. It only contains a bed, a nightstand, a small wardrobe and a candle. There is no hint of the wizard anywhere. “Oh, look. There is a lizard tail on the floor. Maybe it fell out of one of the glasses over the alchemy table.“, Dongju says and searches for the glass with lizard tails. “Oh here it is. Do all lizards have the exact same tails?“, he asks. “No they often have slight colour and size variations.“, Ravn replies. “But these look exactly the same to me.“, Dongju states.
Ravn looks at the tails in the glass. “They are really almost 100% the same.“ “I think I saw something crawl under one of the bookshelves.“, Keonhee screeches and tries to hide behind Hwanwoong. Without any success of course. Seoho goes over to the bookshelves and looks under them. “Hello, sir. Are you under there somewhere? We need your help. We are lost.“, the angel says in a sweet tone. “Don't be silly, Seoho. He is probably hiding in a secret room or something.“, Geonhak says. “But Ravn and his father could turn into animals too.“, Seoho argues. “He is right and we are probably looking for a lizard. That would explain why all the lizard tails look the same and he is probably the thing that Keonhee saw crawling under the bookshelf.“, Hwanwoong explains. They all nod in agreement and get on the floor. Ravn turns into a cat to get into the small spaces in the room easier. A few minutes later Hwanwoong holds a lizard in his small hands. He sets the wizard down on the table and immediatly the lizard disappears and a grumpy old man sits in his place instead. “Okay. I surrender. What do you want?“, he asks. “We are lost and want to go the village where the royal family lives.“, Geonhak explains. “That's what they all say. What do you really want? If you want to know about the secret room in the palace, I don't know anything about it. I applied as wizard for the royal family after the old one died 14 years ago but they told me I was to old. They took this young girl instead. Do I know you, child?“, the old man asks Dongju. “No, but you're not the first one to mistake me for someone else.“, he replies. “Hmm, I thought I did. I don't remember from where, but maybe my memory played a trick on me again.“
“We really just need some directions and a little bit of food for our way. You can trust us. My father is Taeyang, he worked for the royal family as a wizard before and Hwanwoong here is on a mission from the elf king.“, Ravn states. Hwanwoong takes out the letter the king gave him to show to the royal family and shows the old man the seal on it. “Oh yes, the seal on this is really from the elf king. And I also remember Taeyang, the black raven, he went to the north to have a family.“ “So will you help us?“, Seoho asks. “And who are they? And why do you actually want to go to the village? Do you want to serve the king as soldiers?“ “They are my friends and yes we want to become soldiers.“, Ravn lies. “I don't think this beanpole can become a soldier.“, the old wizard says and points at Keonhee. “I am stronger than you think.“, Keonhee defends himself. “And this little angel here doesn't seem quite human to me but he also can't be a wizard, a elf or a vampire.“ The wizard examines Seoho very closely. “Haha, yeah people say this a lot about me but I am just a regular wizard.“, Seoho lies. “And your quiet friend here smells like a dog.“ “He is a werwolf.“ “A WERWOLF?! It's almost nighttime and you bring a werwolf to my house? Do you want to kill us?“ “If I was dangerous, they wouldn't have made it here.“ The wizard looks Geonhak in the eyes for a few seconds, then nods. “Are you even old enough to become a soldier elf?“ “I am half elf and half dwarf.“ “I didn't know that this is possible. And you my child? You are quite powerful for a normal human.“ “I don't know why I have these powers myself. I am an orphan, so I don't know who my parents are and if they got these powers too.“, Dongju explains. “I see. You still seem kind of familiar to me. Well, since I actually know who you all are now and know that you don't want to harm me, you can stay here for the night and I will show you the direction you need to go in and give you supplies tomorrow. I hope it's ok for you to sleep on the floor.“ “Yes, thank you.“, Ravn replies. They eat and fall asleep shortly after. Geonhak only gets waken up somewhere around midnight when someone steps on his tail while sneaking outside to probably pee. They get woken up by the wizard very early in the morning. Geonhak just turned human again with the first rays of sunshine. “I don't like it when people stay so long at my house.“, the old man explains. They eat, pack their things and the food the wizard gave them. Outside the wizard shows them the direction they need to go in to get to village. “The village is a five day hike from here. The futher you go, the more plants there will be and also animals. Be careful some of them might be dangerous.“, the old man warns them. They thank him and go in the direction he pointed at. Hopefully the right direction this time.
