I woke up with someone tugging at my arm. But I chose to ignore it, because Cleo was usually the one to do so. When it happened again, I slightly moved the side. When I finally felt someone draping their leg over mine, I quickly opened my eyes and looked to the side.
It wasn't Cleo. It was her. And she was snoring very loudly. I let out a deep exhale and stared at the ceiling, not knowing how to leave that position we were in. Suddenly, I found myself staring at her.
Her silky, smooth hair was a mess. And her hand was formed into a fist, pressed up against her lips. Just like a baby. My body had a mind of its own and it didn't question my attraction towards this girl I barely knew.
My hands pushed away the hair that was tickling her nose. I slowly started pulling away and sneaked into the kitchen. I didn't know her well enough to tell what she liked for breakfast, so I just decided to make some pancakes, because everybody likes those. After all, she was a baker.
I was pouring down the last pancake, when someone appeared from behind. I thought it was Anika, so I didn't care to turn around, but when she didn't say a word, I found it weird.
My eyes widened in extreme horror, when I found him standing there. He hadn't changed since the last time we'd seen each other. He looked the same and for some reason, I wanted him to change. I wanted to believe that what I had seen that day was just a bad dream.
“You're starting to resist. And here I thought you were a man of word”
His deep voice caused a shiver down my spine and I suddenly forgot how to breath. Why was I resisting? I had been waiting for this moment. I was supposed to hand myself over to him without any objections. That was the deal.
“I knew you'd do that once you'd meet her”
He walked around the kitchen, his gloved hands touching the counter. I just stood there, speechless. I hadn't expected him. I had totally forgotten about him. He smirked at me before taking a seat.
“Weren't you the one hell bent on leaving this place?”
I looked at him and then at the door. I didn't want Anika to see him. I closed my eyes and gathered every ounce of courage left in me. When I looked him in the eye, I realized why people feared him.
“You were the one to give ten more days. I had not asked for them. It was you. And now that I'm here, I'd like to spend them the way I want to”
I could feel the rage inside me growing. What kind of sick joke was this? And why did I have to bump into her? He looked at me with venom in the eye.
“I don't care what you do as long as you don't get attached to her. I will take you with me in four days. If you resist, it's her you're risking”
I opened my mouth to resent him, but he had already vanished in thick air. I stood there, with my eyes still set on the place he was sitting. Slow steps were approaching me again, but they were as soft as Cleo's and I knew who it was.
I clenched my fist and tried to remember why I wanted to leave. When I unclenched, she was already standing at the door. Anika's warm eyes were filled with worry and for some reason it angered me. I turned around, only to find the pancake burning in the stove.
“Are you okay?”, she whispered and I tried to keep my calm, so I just nodded my head. I walked over to the table and set breakfast for us. We still had enough for two people.
“Sit down”, I told her and so did. I had expected her to ask me what was going on, but she seemed awfully quiet. All she did was stare at me the whole goddamn time.
“Spit it out”, I told her and her eyes widened. I raised my head and found her staring at me again. I just shook my head in disbelief.
“Do you want to go to the library with me?”, she asked me and I took a sip from my coffee. She wasn't harmful.
But what she was doing to me, was.
“Okay”, I said and she had that smile on her face again. Why was she like this? I was a nobody to her. She didn't even know me. Why would she trust a stranger?
“You're weird”, I muttered and she giggled. Anika looked at me with that twinkle in her and I wished to bang my head against the wall.
“So I've been told”, she answered and I just looked at her before going back to my pancakes.
When we were done with breakfast, Anika grabbed my hand and we left my place. I looked at the door. It was a sunny day. Her favorite kind of weather.
Anika looked at me and slipped her hand into mine. She really was bold for a girl who acted like a kid. We walked through the city and she'd stop at every window, looking at things.
She was fascinated by what the world had to offer. And I was fascinated by the world she had to offer.
How could I resist her when all she ever did was look at me as if I were the center of her world? She looked at me with such certainty in her eyes that at times, I forgot she wasn't mine and nor was I hers.
I couldn't be. We weren't meant to be together, but all I wanted was for time to stop moving, so that I could spend eternity with her in each moment.
I peeked through the books, only to find her smiling by herself. I somehow pushed my hand through the shelf causing a book to stumble. Anika looked at the book and then at my hand.
She smiled and put back the book. I grabbed her hand and she looked at me surprised.
And all I had to do was smile. For her.
