just pretend

i answered my phone with a huff. sam has been trying to get ahold of me for a good bit.

"hello?" i ask, wondering what was so urgent.

"so, uh, i'm going to a family thing and i need you to come with me." he says, sounding a tad panicked.

"when is this family thing?" i sigh, leaning against my counter.

"in like, 3 hours."

"and you're just telling me today?"

"i didn't know what to do!"

i laugh and look out the window just as a bird flew by.

"what do i have to do?" i snort, looking down to my feet as i cross them.

"just pretend to be my date."

i quirk and eyebrow and glance up.

"pretend to be your date?" i repeat.

"yes. i told my parents i had a girlfriend, but that was months ago when i was with kat." he says, and i wince.

"alright, i'll get ready. pick me up whenever and we'll go."
