Dawnpaw

----------------

The morning dew light up as the sun hit the grass. The pine trees swayed in the gentle breeze of new-leaf. Needles crunched under the paws of cats.

Dawnpaw breathed in deeply. The scent of pines and tree sap filled her nose. Along with the scent of mouse.

Her mentor, Fishstream, stopped in front of her and looked back. "Go get that mouse," he whispered. She looked past him.

A plump brown mouse scuttled around in the needles. She dropped into a hunters crouch and skunk forward. She made sure she was downwind from her prey. Her tail stuck out straight behind her.

Her paws lightly touched the ground as she moved forward. Dawnpaw stopped when she was a few tail-lengths from her prey. She bunched her hind legs underneath her and leaped forward in a big leap.

The mouse squealed when she landed on tip of it. But she quickly gave it a killing bite to the neck. Dawnpaw picked the mouse up in her jaws and trotted back to Fishstream.

"Very good Dawnpaw," he praised. Dawnpaw purred and followed closely behind her mentor. They made their way back through the pines to the Cloudclan camp.

Dawnpaw walked behind Fishstream into camp. The first thing she saw was Hollyfoot's kits tackling her brother, Shadepaw. Dawnpaw laughed behind her mouthful of fur.

She quickly walked over to the fresh-kill pile and set her mouse on top. Mouseears approached her and purred, "That will taste wonderful, Dawnpaw." Dawnpaw purred.

She then went to go help her brother with the kits. Birchkit was batting at Shadepaw's ears while Snakekit tried to bite down onto his tail.

"Shadepaw, Nightpelt needs us," Dawnpaw meowed. Shadepaw looked up at her, "Okay." He grunted as he heaved himself to his paws. Flowerkit was still clinging onto his back. "Don't leave Shadepaw! We were having so much fun," Flowerkit meowed.

Shadepaw shook the kit off of his pelt, "I will come back later to play down more. I promise." Flowerkit looked crestfallen but nodded and scampered away with her two brothers on her heels.

"So, where is he?" Shadepaw meowed. "Nightpelt doesn't need to speak to us. I just said that because you looked like you were getting beaten by kits," Dawnpaw joked.

Shadepaw growled and cuffed her around the ear. She snarled and pushed him to the ground. Before they could take it farther a yowl interrupted them.

Dawnpaw looked to the Greatrock to see her mother calling for a clan meeting. She let Shadepaw get up before walking over to the gathered cats.

Squirrelstar looked around the camp. "I would like to change the way we hunt and fight," she began. Yowls of protests followed her words.

"But I have already taught my apprentice our original hunting and fighting moves. He is almost a warrior, I don't have time to teach everything over again," Mouseears yowled. Many cats nodded with agreement.

Squirrelstar raised her tail for silence. "I know mentors don't want to teach new stuff to their apprentices, and you don't have to. I want to use our territory to our advantage," she meowed. Dawnpaw gave Shadepaw a confused glance.

Many other cats looked up at Squirrelstar with confusion. "We can use the shadows that are all around us. We can hunt in the shadows and fight in the shadows. If we ever have battle then we have an advantage. Our enemies won't be able to see us in the dark. Plus I don't want to be exactly like Sunclan. Lets be different," Squirrelstar explained.

Dawnpaw bristled with excitement. Other cats didn't like change but she did. She couldn't wait to see the look on Branchstar's face when he heard about this.

"But if we are going to change our ways to fit the ways of the shadows in our territory won't Cloudclan's name need to change too. I mean you can't really see the clouds from under the pine trees," Cherrystem meowed.

Squirrelstar nodded, "I agree and that's why I want our clan name to be changed to Shadeclan." Some cats murmured with agreement but some growled with disagreement.

"Are you really going to rename Cloudclan after your own kit! I think your as bad as Blazestar," Thorntail yowled. Dawnpaw glanced to Tigerpaw and Leafpaw, knowing they would react to their fathers name. They were both bristling and giving Thorntail hostile looks.

Squirrelstar was also bristling furiously. "I am nothing like Blazestar! I am making changes that are necessary for the clan. Now if you don't want to end up on apprentice duties then you might want to hold your tongue," Squirrelstar snarled.

Thorntail immediately looked to his paws and didn't say another word. Squirrelstar nodded with satisfaction and looked back to the clan. "Now do I have the clans agreement or not?"

Dawnpaw joined with nodding to her mother. Squirrelstar nodded with approval, "Very well. We will change our ways to the ways of the shadows. And we will no longer be weak Cloudclan. We will be the fearless Shadeclan!"

Dawnpaw jumped to her paws and yowled into the sky with her clanmates. "Shadeclan! Shadeclan!"

As the clan dispersed Fishstream padded up to her. "Lets go do some more training," he meowed. Dawnpaw sighed and followed after him. Being an apprentice was exhausting.
