chapter ten
surgery

"You need to smile more."

Bucky slowly lifted his gaze from their intertwined hands and towards her. They were sitting outside of the surgery room. Ray was about to go under the knife and while the surgery would be easy, Bucky still worried for her. His heart was still breaking for the woman beside him.

"It's hard to smile at a time like this." He told her.

Ray was upset too; that was an understatement. She had only found out about her year sentence a few hours ago. She didn't want to die, she wanted to live. But she tried to have hope and be strong for Bucky, as she did went he went under the first time.

"I know. But it will be okay." Ray reassured both him and herself. "At least when everything is said and done, they might be able to take away the serum. Then I'll just be normal again."

"You've always been normal." Bucky told her, though both of them knew that Ray Banner was anything but.

"Yeah, sure I am." Ray rolled her eyes. Then she took a deep breathe. "We need to talk about the possibility of things going south for me."

"No."

"Bucky. There's a real possibility that we won't find Bruce. He's been hiding away for almost two years now. I'm just saying..."

"I'm not talking about this now. No, not yet. Please Ray, I can't." Bucky looked down.

She immediately wrapped her arm around his broad shoulders and leaned her head against his. "I'm sorry. I just wanted to get it out in the open. I love you."

"Yeah, yeah." He leaned up and looked at her. "I want to go back so badly. I want to go back to that day I came to the ranch. I would change that day Zemo came. We would've went out or something."

Ray smiled at the idea as she turned to look at him; though she knew that never would have kept Zemo from finding them. She set her hand on the back of his neck and threaded her hands through his hair. "It would have been nice." She said that because she knew he needed to hear it.

"What are you going to do while I'm in surgery?" Ray asked next.

"This." He nodded his head towards the chairs they were on.

"No. You should go hang out with Steve. He's been dying to reconnect with you since Vienna. He misses you."

Bucky looked at her. He didn't want to leave this chair. He wanted to stay with her during surgery and wait until she comes out. But his thoughts drifted to his old friend. He did miss Steve; he realized for the first time. Emotions and memories of his past were foreign to him but they were very much present in him for the first time.
