chapter eighteen
bullets

A small bullet laid in the middle of a metal hand. Ray looked between him and the broken window for a moment before Bucky threw himself over her. The chair toppled over and he fell on top of her.

A stream of bullets hit the wall and very skillfully, and Bucky pulled Ray away from the wall. They heard movement from downstairs and they both knew it was their friends.

"Stay down." Bucky told her.

"No, no, Bucky stay here." She told him, grabbing onto his hand.

"Stay down." He repeated.

Bucky moved to the wall and slowly inched towards the window. He peered out the window for only a second before another round of bullets came through.

"Bucky, please." Ray said again, begging for him to come back.

"Ray!" Bruce's voice carried from downstairs.

"I see him." Bucky said as Bruce and Steve ran into the room, Natasha and Sam behind them. "Steve give me the gun." As soon as Bucky was handed the gun the shooting started again.

Bruce went to his daughter and helped her up. When she was on her feet she stepped away from him.

"The shooters coming from the floor above us." Bucky told Steve. "They went further back."

Steve looked at Bucky, already knowing his thoughts. "Bucky, don't."

"They tried to kill Ray." Bucky said before climbing out the window; he ignored Ray calling for him.

Ray watched in a mix of terror and anger as her love left through the window and Steve and Sam went with him.

"Are you hurt? What even happened?" Bruce asked as he looked over his daughter.

"I'm fine." She moved away to look out the window, but Steve, Sam, and Bucky were gone. She could hire sirens in the distance. "The cops are on their way. Kill the lights. They're going to see the window and come into the house."

"We need to go, now." Natasha said.

"No, not without Bucky and Steve." Ray shook her head. "We can't leave them."

"They will know we went back to the jet."

Then Ray saw three figures walking across the roof. She smiled with relief and looked back at Natasha. "They're back."

"We couldn't catch the shooter." Steve said as they walked through the back door of the house. "It was a woman though. And they've been tracking us."

"How do you know?" Natasha asked and crossed her arms.

A duffle bag was dropped on the table and Sam pulled out pictures. They were of the group from back in the Philippines and even in Wakanda.
