"Ha!" Hansel laughed. Gretel breathed. "I got you, for once!" "This is no time to play games, Hansel!" Gretel shouted. "You have to admit that it was funny." Hansel giggled. Gretel paused, catching her breath. "Sure," She breathed. "I guess that it was... but we must go now." Gretel grabbed Hansel's hand and pulled him towards the path into the village. "Hurry up, we'll be late. Life is hard enough as it is for Mother and Father, we can't make it any harder." Hansel rolled his eyes. "Just because you are fourteen and I'm eight doesn't make much of a difference," Hansel mumbled. "It kinda does, Hansel." She said. They both made their way into town and stopped at the bakery. The place was nearly empty but everyone worked as hard as they could.

"Papa!" Hansel cried. His father smiled brightly and hurried over to them. "I have food for today!" He said excitedly. Gretel smiled. "Yes." She whispered. "Well, hurry on, now, Hansel. There is a place for you to put the wood up for sale outside." Father said. "I'm going," Hansel mumbled. Gretel grimaced. "Are you going back home?" Father asked. "I don't know," Gretel replied. "Is Mother okay?" Gretel nodded. "She's fine and will be much better when she hears about eating tonight." Father nodded.

"Thank you for trying your best to help us during this time, Gretel. I'm sorry that I couldn't give you and your brother what is needed." He said. "It's not your fault, Papa, nor is it mother's." She said sympathetically. "Don't turn out as I have." "Shall we go back?" She asked. Father nodded. "Take good care of him." He whispered. Gretel nodded. "I will." "Take this bag home with you too?" Gretel took the bag and made her way outside where Hansel was standing. "We have to go now, Papa will take care of the wood."

"What's in the bag?" Hansel asked curiously. "It's food, we're going to eat a good supper tonight." She opened to bag. "It looks like we have some flour, oh, eggs, milk, and some cheese!" "Wow!" Hansel breathed. "I don't remember ever having cheese." He murmured, admiring the food. "Well, today's your day. I guess the extra work has paid off." Gretel said smiling.

"I'll catch a rabbit for supper," Hansel promised. "That'd be lucky." Gretel scoffed. Hansel rolled his eyes. "I won't come out of the forest until I get myself a rabbit."
