Father hurried back to the cottage in the darkness. He could see a small trail of white pebbles that he knew were Hansels because of his strange paranoia of becoming lost. He opened the door. "You're back." Mother said. Father nodded. "Where are Hansel and Gretel?" "They went looking for you." Mother said. "I saw Hansel's trail of pebbles," Father said. "It's fine, they'll be back soon." Mother said. His face changed into fear. "What, David?'
"They won't. Hansel's trap had something on it and I didn't tell him." Mother frowned. "Tell him what?" She asked. His eyebrows raised. "What it means." He whispered, standing still for a moment and then running outside. He followed the trail of pebbles until they completely stopped right on the edge of the road. He didn't think for a second and walked straight into the forest.
"Why aren't we there yet?" Hansel asked. "Don't know." She replied. "We went the wrong way didn't we?" Hansel asked. Gretel didn't say anything. "Let's turn around. You got a trail, right?" He nodded. "Dropped pebbles the entire time." He said proudly. "Then where are they?" Gretel asked, turning around. Hansel turned too. "I swear I dropped them." He said. "Looks like you didn't." She said studying the ground for a few feet. "We're lost?" Hansel asked. Gretel nodded. "I guess so, but that's fine, we'll find our way out tomorrow." Hansel sat down. "We're sleeping here!" "Don't want to get more lost do you?" Gretel asked sitting down. "Let's just go to sleep, we'll find home tomorrow."
Gretel fell asleep next to the tree root, not very worried about finding her way back. She dreamed of the time she'd been told a story from her father.
"Once there was a town of people who lived in this very forest. It always was dark and rarely sunny and no one really knew why. It would often rain cold icy drops.
There was a little girl named Alice, who often went strangely far into the forest. She always enjoyed the rain and dreary parts of the forest. She always wore a yellow bonnet and blue dress and often adults would see her poke her head behind the trees with a little smile. They would look over at her but always, in a flash, she would go back into the forest.
None of the kids even liked her one bit because of her strange behavior and adults would also try to keep their children away. Alice's parents knew something was wrong and they eventually sent her to a house far off in the forest. Alice was sent alone to the house and was never seen again. The house was never found and the girl was never found. People who lived in the forest where she used to be were never heard of again either. The people who used to visit could not find the place as if it had never even existed."
