Hansel carefully picked it up and held it away from his face studying it. The sun was just beginning to rise as he looked to the house once more. It was gone.

He could only hear himself once more and his own breathing. He looked down at the pebbles and began to follow the trail again, making sure not to ever look away from them. He heard disoriented sound from behind but he didn't want to turn around, he only walked more, following the trail of pebbles. Hansel eventually came to the end and looked up to see the cottage. He breathed a sigh of relief and placed the wood down. The door of the cottage opened as Gretel exited. "Hey, Hansel, what are you doing up so early?" Gretel whispered. "Checking the trap," Hansel whispered. "Has papa left yet?" "He's getting up now," Gretel replied. "Good, that means that I can show him this thing right here," Hansel said, holding up the trap. "What did you do?" Gretel asked. "Nothing, I found it like this." He murmured.

Father opened the door to the cottage with a bag across his shoulder. "Papa, look at this," Hansel said hurrying over to him. Father took it and examined it. "Do you know what that black stuff is?" Hansel asked. Father's eyes looked at it and then at Hansel with the oddest expression. His eyes looked fearful. "Papa?" Father looked at it a moment more and suddenly handed it back to him, nearly shoving it away. "No, I do not know what that means. I mean is." He said. Hansel nodded and Gretel looked at him. "Be careful with how far you go into the forest children, remember..." "People have gone missing." Hansel interrupted. "Exactly," Father said. "I'll be off now, do your chores and be careful." Gretel looked at Hansel. "That was odd," Gretel whispered. "Indeed." He agreed.
