Warnings: Two swear words
You were so ready for movie night.
Early on in your relationship with Mat, you had a terrible head cold and couldn't go on your date scheduled for that night, so he came to your apartment armed with pints of ice cream and enough candy to last for over a month. You watched a movie on the couch, and Mat insisted on cuddling you despite the fact that you were contagious and you had begged him not to because you didn't want him to get sick.
Movie night quickly became a tradition, and you watched a different movie almost every time. You were particularly excited for tonight because he just came back from a two-week road trip, and Tito let it slip on FaceTime a few days ago that Mat had never seen Mean Girls.
"Wait a second, you've never seen Mean Girls? Are you fucking joking right now?" You were shocked.
"Thanks, Tito," Mat said sarcastically to his friend, who he hit (playfully, of course) on the shoulder.
"Ow!" Tito managed to choke out through chuckles, "I just thought (Y/N) should know how culturally deprived you are."
Mat glared at both of you, even though one of you was on the video screen and the other next to him, as the two of you burst into laughter.
"I am not culturally deprived!" Mat insisted, which only made you laugh harder.
Ever since that conversation, you made it your mission to rectify Mat's ignorance of Mean Girls, and movie night was the perfect time to do it. Mean Girlsis a big deal everywhere, but it is especially huge on Long Island because Lindsay Lohan grew up here. Rumor has it that "North Shore High School" refers to Long Island's own North Shore. You and your friends worshipped Lindsay and the movie ever since it came out when you were eight years old, and your parents only let you see it at that age because she was the star. You could recite most, if not all, of the lines by heart. No wonder Mat laughed as if he didn't truly understand the reference whenever you dropped one of the lines in casual conversation. He simply had to watch the movie.
Movie night finally came around, but you had a rough day at work today and you were absolutely exhausted. You changed into sweatpants and one of Mat's old Islanders sweatshirts and waited patiently on the couch, the movie already cued up on your laptop.
You yawned as the door opened and Mat entered your apartment.
"Hey, babe, I missed you," Mat said as he came over to the couch and lifted you into his arms, hugging you tightly. "You look tired."
"No, I'm fine, I'm totally..." You tried to sound chipper, but another massive yawn cut you off.
"Rough day at work today?" Mat said as he put you down on the couch.
"No shit, Sherlock," you replied.
"Cranky, too, are we?" Mat chuckled. "I'm just going to jump in the shower real quick, I'll be right back."
He reached behind you for the blanket draped on the back of the couch and laid it on top of you before going into the bedroom.
The last thing you remembered was desperately fighting to stay awake, but your eyelids slid closed anyway.
*****
You woke up to find Mat's arms wrapped around you.
You sat up a little and realized that he was watching Miracle on your laptop.
"Wha-what are you doing?" you said, but your voice wasn't very clear because it was laced with sleep.
"Hey, babe, did you have a nice nap?" Mat asked, leaning over to kiss your cheek.
"We're...we're supposed to be watching..." You tried to get the sentence out but gave up when you yawned again.
"I saw what you had in mind, and I decided to watch something else instead."
"You aren't getting out of this," you said, but your mind was foggy, and you wanted nothing more than to go back to sleep.
Mat chuckled. "This is going to sound cheesy, but...I love when you're half asleep and talking nonsense."
"Do you actually think you can sweet talk your way out of not watching Mean Girls?" you scoffed.
"Not after Tito sold me out. But you're exhausted, and I didn't want to deprive you of the joy of 'enlightening' me, so I figured we can watch it tomorrow," Mat said, quoting your words from the FaceTime conversation a few days ago.
"Do you promise we'll watch it tomorrow?" you asked.
"Yes, I promise. Go back to sleep; I'll be here when you wake up, angel."
Mat put his hand on your cheek to turn your face towards his, and your lips met in a kiss before you settled your head on his chest and fell back asleep.
