Chapter 5
That next Saturday was pretty uneventful. My mom was working again so Mitch and I had the house to ourselves. I slept in until I started having those weird late morning dream. After the fourth one about dragons, I gave up and went to shower and do some laundry. I meandered on the internet for a while, web chatting with Macy who was stuck at her house doing scrabble with her aunt and other fantastic games like that. After that, I joined Mitch’s couch potato clan and watched some movie about a devil and a lawyer.
But, after a while, I got bored of that too. Sighing, I tossed the remote at my brother who caught, unexpectedly. “You can have the TV for now,” I say, standing up and stretching.
He flips it in his hands, surprised. “Why, are you going somewhere?”
I nod. I look out and decide that it’s not too dark yet. “I think I’m gonna take Zeus for a walk.”
Mitch nods before turning back towards the TV, changing the station to some sports channel. I walk over to the counter and grab my keys before I slip on my light hooded jacket. I grab the leash from where it hangs on it’s peg by the front door and whistle for Zeus. His head pricks up and I call to him sweetly, patting my thighs for him to come. He “roof’s” at me before getting up off of the couch and trotting over.
“Remember, don’t leave all of the lights on and don’t answer the door while I’m gone, okay?” I call as I attach the chain leash to Zeus’ collar. Mitch just gives me a lazy hand wave making me roll my eyes. I stand up and smile down at my dog who’s looking up adoringly at me. “Ready to go for a walk, boy?”
He “roofs” again, pawing at the door. Smiling, I open up it and let him out, keeping a firm grip on the chain. I tell him to sit as I turn around and lock the door behind me, always the worry wort.
“Alright, let’s go,” I mumble, giving Zeus’ chain a bit of slack. He starts trotting down the driveway and I follow behind him, humming slightly as I do. I take a left and walk down Summer Street, not my usual route. The houses are slightly bigger on this street, getting larger and larger as we walk. I mean, my house isn’t small, but it’s not like these. These are...wow. That’s what I think as I gaze up at them, Zeus trotting beside me, not a care in the world as his tongue lolls out the side of his mouth.
We keep walking, me lost in my thoughts, and Zeus chasing butterflies as they pass by. Not noticing the time, I don’t realize until we’re too far away from the house that we won’t make it back before it gets dark. It’s not like Jefferson is a dangerous town, but I’m more worried about Mitch than myself. He’s the kind of kid who would catch the house on fire while you were out for only a matter of minutes. Zeus and I have been gone for nearly forty-five.
Yeah. I bet the house is gone now.
“Shit,” I mutter, stopping, whistling for Zeus to come back. He walks over and sits at my feet. I run a hand through the loose hairs that have come out of my pony tail and reach to check my phone to see the time before I realize that I left it at home. Groaning, I look up and notice the setting sun.
Great. I start to bite my lip as I turn to lead Zeus home when I realize...I have no idea where I am.
But, just as I’m about to start panicking, I hear his voice.
