Chapter 7

"I just don’t understand why you had to bring me,” Macy grumbles, shutting the car door. “The project isn’t even due for another week and we all know it won’t take long.”

“I know that, but I guess they want to get a lot of it done before try-outs this week,” I say, locking the car behind me as I step onto the sidewalk that leads to Vinnie’s. Mitch is already here, having ridden with the guys, according to the text I got from him a few minutes ago. “And besides, I thought you would have wanted to come, seeing as Kyler’s going to be here and all...”

“Don’t be mean.” She shoves my shoulder lightly. “I don’t want to feel like I’m just a tagalong friend,” she mumbles, opening the door to the restaurant and giving me a reluctant look.

“You’re not,” I reassure her, the bell ringing as the door swings shut. I spot the guys over in the back corner booth, one big enough for all of us to sit at. “Hey, they’re over there.” Macy nods and we both make our way over there.

“Why are those girls giving us weird looks?” she says under her breath, pointing discretely at the group of girls sitting by the window, eating the only green item on Vinnie’s menu.

I shrug and look forward, ignoring it. “Beats me. The best thing to do is ignore them and let them eat their rabbit food in peace.”

Macy laughs. “Only you, Layla, only you.”

I give her a quick grin over my shoulder before we get to the table, stopping next to it and facing the boys, minus Blake and Jason who had detention, with their noses in the menu’s, and apparently, in mid-conversation.

“Why can’t we just get the Hawaiian?” Jackson asks, setting the menu down with a slap. “It’s the best option!”

“Oh shut up,” Chase retorts with a roll of his eyes, setting his own menu down and leaning back. “We’ll order a large pepperoni and then whatever the girls want and that’s final.”

Jackson glares at his friend. “You suck. You never let me order Hawaiian! You even like it, don’t deny it!”

“I never said I didn’t like it, I just said I wasn’t in the mood for it.”

Jackson rolls his eyes. “You’re impossible.”

“And we’re here,” I announce, flicking Chase in the ear to get his attention. “So, scoot over and let’s hurry up and order so we can get this project started.”

The boys all mumble “hey’s” and move to make room for Macy and I. Kyler immediately stands and ushers Macy into the booth, much to her pleasure according to her red cheeks. Everyone else on the other side just converges more into the middle, leaving me sitting on the edge next to Jackson.

I’m bursting with joy, believe me.

Kyler, still standing, points towards the front of the restaurant. “Do you two want anything to drink?”

“Yeah, um I’ll have a root beer and Macy’ll have...?”

“A lemonade, please,” she says quietly, looking down at the table, her hands folded neatly in her lap and her hair shielding her face from Kyler who towers over her.
