Chapter 6

“You have got to be kidding me.”

“I’m not!” I insist to Macy as we get out of Lieutenant. “It’s all true! He was gone when I woke up so I just didn’t think about it until now.”

Macy shakes her head at me as she shuts my car door. “I can’t believe you let him inside your house. I would have thought you might have let him sleep in Zeus’ old dog kennel you guys keep in the backyard.”

“Ha,” I say without emotion, glaring against the sun, the bright light peeking over the edge of the school.

Jackson left Sunday morning before Mitch or I woke up. He didn’t leave a note or tell anyone he was leaving which made Mitch “weirded out” enough to text him to make sure he got home okay. He wasn’t in my house anymore so honestly, I didn’t really care.

Apparently, he made it safe and sound because I see him leaning up against the side the school, cool as a cucumber with around seven girls surrounding him, all of them wearing outfits that would make a nun have a heart attack.

“Ugh, hurry up and walk,” I grumble, grabbing Macy’s arm and marching her up the stairs, “I don’t want to have to see his face attached to an STD this early in the morning.”

She rolls her eyes at me, but relents and lets me pull us through the crowded hallways and to our lockers. “Honestly Layla,” she says, pulling free and leaning against her locker, folding her arms across her chest as she pins me with the look. “Was it that bad, spending hanging out with Jackson? I mean, I know you partially did it-” she switches thoughts when she sees my expression, “-okay, mostly because I asked you, but wasn’t a little fun?”

I give her a quick look over my shoulder as I shelve my books. “We didn’t hang out, Mace, he basically made me let him walk me home because it was dark and I may or may not have known the way back to my house. That’s it.”

“Okay, but you have to admit, it was really nice of him to offer to walk you home.”

“Yeah, and I’m sure Hitler may have done some nice things too,” I respond dryly, making Macy’s eyes grow large.

She laughs disbelievingly, fixing her glasses. “I can’t believe you just compared Jackson Manning to Hitler.”

“Who’s comparing Jackson to Hitler?” Jason asks in a shocked voice, walking up with Mitch and Blake, all of them with their backpacks over their shoulders and sporting that annoying “I just got out of bed and I don’t care” look.

I roll my eyes and turn to face our friends and my little brother. “Me, but it was ambiguous. It’s not like I-”

“Hey guys, what’s going on?” Kyler asks, walking up behind me, his shadow nearly covering all of us. He looks at Macy and smiles causing her cheeks to flush. “Morning, Macy.”

“Morning,” she murmurs back, fixing her glasses such an adorable way, I’m surprised everyone doesn’t just go “Awww!”.

“Anyways,” I say, giving Kyler a look for interrupting me. “As I was saying, it was am-”
