Chapter 8
“I made it, I made it!” Mitch yells, running towards me Thursday morning before school, his varsity jersey in his hand.
“Woa there,” I say through a laugh, catching him as he barrels into me, hugging the life out of me. “Congrats bro, but you’re squishing me.”
“Sorry,” he says pulling back, not looking very sorry at all. His face is dominated by a huge grin and his eyes twinkle like they used to on Christmas morning when he thought that Santa had brought him all of those amazing toys. “I’m just so happy, I can’t even think!”
“We told you that you’d make it,” Macy says, shaking her head. “But congrats, Mitch. You deserve it.”
“Thanks, Mace,” he says back, grinning full-out as he pulls her in for a hug.
She laughs, startled by this weird affectionate side of my brother, raising her eyebrows at me over his shoulder, but I just shake my head at the two of them, grinning. It’s not everyday you see your baby brother this happy.
“Hey, Mitch!” someone calls from down the hall. My brother lets go of Macy and we all turn around to see Chase, Kyler, and Jackson making their way down the hallway towards us.
“I made it!” Mitch calls, holding up the jersey for them to see. And, as soon as they do, they all grin and jog over, clapping him on the back and giving him those weird bro-hugs.
“Congrats man,” Chase says, looking one-hundred percent sincere. “You’re going to be a great addition to the team.”
“We’ll definitely need you in the midfield since Rogers graduated last year,” Kyler adds, folding his ginormous biceps across his chest, right at Macy’s eye level. I watch with a twisted smirk as her eyes go wide and she visibly gulps, taking a step back and pushing her glasses up.
A laugh hidden as a couch makes me turn around. Jackson stands there, leaning against the lockers trying to hide his grin. When he notices me looking, he actually grins and motions me towards him.
Walking over, I lean against the locker next to his. “What’s so funny?” I ask, looking up at him.
“You know exactly what,” he responds, giving me a look. “I know you see the way those two react around each other,” he says, pointing at Macy and Kyler, Kyler looking rather out of his element as he tries to talk to my best friend who looks like a bunny corned by a lion.
I laugh and shake my head, looking back up at him. “It’s just so funny, watching them interact. I mean, Kyler’s huge and massive and intimidating and Macy’s-”
“Not?” Jackson supplies, laughing. “I know. Hopefully, they’ll figure it out.”
“One would assume so,” I mutter dryly, pushing off of the locker and walking over to everyone else. “So, who all made the team? How’s it looking this year?”
“Everyone from last year and a few new guys, including Mitch. And good,” Kyler says, nodding, “really good. We should be contenders for the state cup.”
