8. Amalie

I grin as I hear Lucy cursing in her office, raising my hand to knock on the door, I wait for the instruction to enter.

"Trouble?" I ask her smiling and hand her a coffee.
"Ahh, I love them, but I could happily smack them upsides their heads right now" she growls, dropping into her seat.
"What have they done this time?" I ask curiously.

"Roger has quit, I thought he would manage better than James but two days, just two days with the little devils and he quits, not even a request for a transfer, just a resignation" she moans.

I grin to myself at her words, I had met the twins a couple of weeks after I started working here, they were amazing athletes, potential Olympic rowers, if they didn't screw up. But they were a PR nightmare, they were also Lucy' godchildren, so she gave them a lot of leeway, only they went too far and Lucy and the twins mom Teddy had suggested they have an assistant to keep them on the straight and narrow.  So far the twins had run off two experienced assistants, and Lucy wasn't quite sure how.

"What are you going to do, don't they have an event next week?" I ask and Lucy groans.
"God knows, they agreed to the assistant but then chase them off, I don't know what to suggest.  The boys swear to me, they are behaving but I can't prove what they are up too. The other assistants have all heard about the boys and have already told me no, before I've even asked.  I am in Italy with Paul or I could go with them.  Hell, I'm just going to have to trust them to behave"

"They remind me of my little brothers, they're always getting into trouble too.  But they're harmless really" I tell her laughing.
My laugh dies as I watch a look cross her face, her eyes coming up to mine and I feel like a bug under a microscope as she looks at me.

"Lucy?"
She shakes her head and smiles "Ignore me, I had a thought but it was silly" she says, reaching for a folder on her desk and changing the conversation.

I'm just getting ready to leave the office when Teddy appeared looking for Lucy and I take her through to the conference room where she is working with Paul.  As we get closer I hear them talking about the twins and then I freeze as I hear my name mentioned, Teddy coming to a stop beside me.

"Oh, what an interesting idea" Teddy says patting my arm before moving past me into the room, making Paul and Lucy look up and say hello.

"Come on in Amalie" Teddy calls behind her and I hover in the doorway nervously as Paul smiles at me.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt or eavesdrop, I was just showing Teddy through then leaving" I stutter out nervously.

Lucy shakes her head at me "Come in child, you heard what I said" she questions and I nod.

"This is what I thought better of this morning but I keep coming back to it, and now it's out there.  What do you think?" she tells me.

I slide into a chair and grimace at the people round the table "I don't think they will listen to me anymore than the others, and I don't think I've got the experience to handle them, having met them, I think they will ignore me" I tell them honestly.

Teddy and Paul laugh, while Lucy smiles "And that is why you would be ideal, that and the fact you are used to twins behaviour.  But... I don't want to put you in a position you feel unsafe in"

"You really think I could do it?" I ask them nervously and Lucy nods.

"Yes, we can trial it as a one off for the event next week, after that we will see how you feel about it" Paul said and I nodded, excited and anxious about the opportunity.

"Amalie, I will need to let your parents know" Paul said softly and I froze, raising worried eyes to his.
"Why?"
"Because I promised to keep you safe and until they have finished investigating what happened to you, I had told them you would be office based." he explained.

"I want to do this" I tell him and he nods, exchanging a look with Lucy and Teddy.
"Okay, I will talk them round, but if at any poi..."
"I will tell you, if it's an issue" I butt in softly.

Paul hold's his hands up in surrender.
"Okay, okay, now get off home, and relax, you've been working all day" he laughs and I do.

I miss the three sets of eyes that watch me leave the room, waiting for me to be out of hearing.  Paul gets up and shuts the door before turning to Teddy.

"I need the boys to be on their best behaviour, that girl has been through so much and I won't let their antics cause her any more grief.  I won't let her down again" he tells Teddy.

"She was attacked?" Teddy questions and Paul and Lucy stare at her surprised.
"How did you know?" Lucy asks worried.
"I've seen the pain in her eyes, and I know somethings knocked her confidence, that and you both show guilt when dealing with her.  How bad was it?" Teddy replies.

"Her parents are looking into who did it but she was drugged and r... "Lucy scowled, she couldn't bring herself to say the word.  "And when they find him, they will make sure he faces justice, I don't care who he is"

Teddy shares a look with Paul. The circuit can be a dangerous place for young female athletes.  "I'll warn the boys about their behaviour, don't worry I won't mention this but if she needs anything or if they do anything to upset her, let me know."

Paul and Lucy nod, before clearing away the work and heading out to dinner with Teddy.
