He hummed along as the rest of the song played out, in his own world.

"You're really good, you know."

David jumped, turning down the radio. "Oh, um, sorry. I didn't think anyone else was here," he said apologetically.

"Me either." The boy shrugged. "I always come early. Lots of things to prepare for the new year. But why are you sorry? Your voice is very impressive."

He blushed. "I mean, I sound like a girl."

"No, you sound like Whitney," he corrected. "And that's an accomplishment."

David laughed at that. "I suppose."

"Are you excited for prank day?"

"Um, what- what's that?"

The boy looked surprised. "Oh! Is- You're a freshman?"

"No, no, I'm a sophomore," David explained, "I just didn't go here my freshman year, so I'm afraid I don't know much."

He nodded. "Oh, well prank day is on the second day of school; it's the day everyone pranks the teachers and new kids to sort of break the ice and show them Dalton isn't as strict of a school as it's made out to be." He chuckled. "Last year I replaced Blaine's hair gel with raspberry jello. He didn't know until halfway through the day."

David laughed. "Wouldn't he wonder why he smelled like raspberry all day?"

"That's the best part, his hair gel is raspberry scented. I was making a point of how fragrant it was."

"How did he finally notice?"

"He didn't. His boyfriend did."

David laughed along with him, mentally jumping up and down with joy that being gay was something you could mention in passing. That fact that they were boyfriends wasn't vital to the story, but it was still his favorite part.

"Oh, I'm Wes, by the way," he said.

He felt like he had heard the name somewhere before but shook it off. "David. David Thompson."

"So it's your first day here and you chose to get acquainted with the kitchen?" Wes asked.

David blushed. "One of my friends goes here but he's not here yet, and I was getting kinda stressed waiting for everyone so I decided to calm myself down the only way I know how."
