"Are you gay?"
It was the last question David expected to hear in the middle of English class. The class was getting their work done while chatting, yet the question was unmistakably aimed at him.
Wes was resting his head on his hand, looking over at him. His work was already finished.
"What?" David asked, mostly surprised. "I- I mean yeah, I'm bi."
He just smiled, David's heart beating faster. "Why? Um, why do you ask?"
"Oh, just curious."
The question slipped out before he could stop it. He knew Jeff had told him.
"Are you?"
Wes shrugged. "I'm demisexual. Not a lot of people know, though. I'm still figuring it out, but I'm nearly 100% sure I'm attracted to guys."
He... guys.
He likes guys.
Guys.
"That's cool."
He chuckled. "Not when you have homophobic parents. They're the main reason I haven't really shouted it from the rooftops."
"Oh, that's awful, I'm so sorry. You should meet my mom, she's super supportive about it."
'You should meet my mom.' Who says that?
"I'd love to," he said, chuckling. "What about your father?"
"Oh, I don't really know him, he and my mom aren't together anymore," he shrugged. It wasn't a big deal to him, but it seemed to be to everyone else.
"Man, I'd love to just live with my mom. She's more laidback, she could accept me if my father didn't immediately throw me out of the house."
"Ouch. He's that bad about it?"
"Worse. Apparently knowing gays go to hell isn't enough for him, he has to make life hell for them too. He says he's doing God's work, but we all know that's a bunch of bullshit."
David laughed. "True. Your parents are religious?"
"Oh, very. I am too, our interpretations just differ."
"I mean, if all of us were made in God's image, doesn't that mean He was gender fluid and at least a little bit gay?"
"You have a point," Wes laughed.
David just watched him as he laughed, smiling. Wes had a beautiful laugh. Beautiful, like the rest of him.
